Hello Everyone,
I am planning to develop a desktop app but wanted something
platform independent. So I thought of using GWT for the UI and backend
as the MYSQL everything running locally. I plan to deploy my
application with a server. Will I face any problems whatsoever if I
choose GWT for my UI. Any suggestions as to what I should use instead?

You may want to take a look at phonegap for desktop: http://www.phonegap.com

Also  check  Titanium Desktop(which is no more supported from appcelerator ) :  http://www.appcelerator.com/
Or Adobe AIR(which i personally prefer )  http://www.adobe.com/products/air.html

Just wondering: you're creating a desktop app, with no web equivalent, and deploying a database et at. with it, right? And you're wondering how to support Windows, Linux, OSX, etc.?

Why don't you simply develop a Java heavy-client app? with Swing or similar toolkit?

Otherwise, yes, you could develop an Adobe AIR or PhoneGap app and make use of the internal SQL DB (rather than an external, yet local, MySQL server).

Or am I misunderstanding what you mean by "desktop app" and "platform independent" ?
