Loading a GWT application n development mode

I have developed a small GWT applicattion using the GWT designer on Eclipse 3.7 64 bit on Windows7 64 bit with SP1. I am using GWT 2.4 and GAE 1.5.5. My problem is that when I try to launch the application in development mode, the development module starts but when I select "Launch Default Browser" Google Chrome responds with

Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to 127.0.0.1:8888

while the URL shown is http://127.0.0.1:8888/LearnFluentSpanish.html?gwt.codesvr=127.0.0.1:9997

This implies to be that the development runtime is not properly loaded, but I have no idea what might be wrong or where to start trouble shooting. This is my first web project so I would appreciate any information on what I might have possibly done wrong.
