Customizing bar charts

Hello,
I have a very limited amount of coding experience as I'm primarily a
designer. I do have some though. I'd like to customize the bar charts
in particular and was wondering if there are any tutorials that
address this (preferably video ones)? I need to use gradients,
borders, etc. Also, is it possible to use a tiled image(png, jpg,
gif) for a bar chart?

Hi and welcome,

All the charts that you need, including an extensive documentation and configuration options (for each chart type) can be found in the charts gallery site:  http://code.google.com/apis/chart/interactive/docs/gallery.html 

If you want to "feel" and "get your hands dirty" in changing and playing with the charts, you can use the "playground": http://code.google.com/apis/ajax/playground/?type=visualization

In any other questions, feel free to search the group's extensive history, or just ask :-)

Note that the interactive charts do not support gradients or images in bars.  I believe the image charts support gradients (see http://code.google.com/apis/chart/image/); I don't know about tiles images, though - you lose the interactivity of the interactive charts, though.

Thanks folks. I have looked at those links and am becoming more
familiar with them. I'm trying not to expect too much as I know this
is not primarily a design tool, but I do have two more questions:

could you layer colors on a image chart. For example a solid fill
below and a gradient on top with some transparency showing through to
the solid fill?

Is there a way to put a border around a bar chart?

In the case of interactive bar charts, yes you can put a border around them.
