I'm using My Maps to generate simple maps with addresses and custom place markers. The maps look fine in Google, but when I export the KML files and use the API, almost all the custom markers are replaced by the default blue marker. I'm using the gmap3 jquery plugin in my actual implementation, but I also included a fiddle without gmap3 for reference.

This issue seems to be pretty well documented for other users, but I haven't found a thread with the solution to this problem. Is there a solution, or a workaround?

Seems to be a variation of this thread

I got to see your map with a half red / half blue marker i.e. the icon
was different where it was split on a tile boundary.
I think this is a KmlLayer rendering problem, and you won't be able to
circumvent it yourself, but do make sure your icon images are hosted
on a fast server. Response times looked okay to me.
