Hello mappers.

As always, thank you for continuing to share your local knowledge with us through Google Map Maker. As several of you have mentioned, much of the mapping contributions being made for Latin America have yet to be shared with the broader public on Google Maps. The reason for this delay is due to the technical challenges involved with combining the ever growing Map Maker data set with the several additional sizable data sets we have today on Google Maps. We’ll do our best to provide you with updates as we forge ahead in the process. We appreciate all of the great contributions you have made to Google Map Maker to date and thank you for your steadfast perseverance to make the maps of Latin America the best in the world.

Thank you,
Lori

Hi Lori,

I appreciate that you let us know that you actually are aware about the questions. But I have to ask for a little more information.

We are able to edit the Brazilian maps through MM, but why exactly should we do that? The official Google maps contain countless errors - errors that we are able to correct. But why should we put any energy into correcting something when the corrections are not put live?

This community of volunteers deserve something better than a generic company line with no progress reports at all. There has not been any news the last year.

I do appreciate that it is not you making the policy, but as you are the only one that can carry messages between mappers and Google, it is good to let you know that I think the communication is a bit lacking. A roadmap would be a good thing. I am sure that the brilliant minds of the people at Google can easily solve any problems arising. If they can integrate edits in the USA, then they can integrate in the rest of America :-)

Regards,

Svein Wisnaes

Hello there. I'm Vinícius, and I map Brazil. Recently, Google said that they'll not use map data (streets, roads and etc) on Google Maps from GMM Brazil and no reason was given, but the probably reason is that there's some sort of error and problem on converting GMM maps to GM. And I'm here to say that if Google can please take the Brazil problem further, analyze what's the problem and try to fix it atleast. I've mapped my entire town and mapped some roads around it, and I'd really like to see all of our (all of Brazilians) job appearing on Google Maps. We want to map Brazil (Part of Latin America), but we can't =(

Brazil is mapped by Map Link / Tele Atlas is the one who passes the data to google! Poor data quality is very hard to find something right, hey I think that junk posting nonsense cartographer's "Brazil" in the Google world map, I hope the work of many in the Map Maker is finally useful! We are waiting to be able to help! Thanks!

Hi Lori,
I appreciate the efforts being made in this way. However, as temporary support,I'll appreciate so much the availability of MAPMAKER layers in the v3 API. That functionality was in the version v2, but not in the new version. This fix is pending, and seems that is almost frozen, see support ticket http://goo.gl/3wR98
You can see some differences in maps on the following link:http://goo.gl/h7s19
thanks

Hi again,
Perhaps my previous explanation was not very clear. By enabling the MAPMAKER layer again in MAPS API version v3 (this functionality were lost when moving from the version 2) it would be possible at least to show the mapmaker maps embedded in websites, for example, applied to tourist regions.
So, I'll appreciate all your support in making this workaround working again.
thanks
Gustavo

Gustavo, I don't think the Map Maker staff will be able to help get that layer into API. You'd need to request that in the API forums.

Olá Gustavo, Hi all!

It looks like on the same day you made this post here, Issue 2349 on Google Maps API got a Fixed status :) [Comment 47]

So, this are good news! Meaning that our edits on Google Map Maker: Places, Shapes and Linear features are available for developers to use them and can be published via a layer using Google Maps API, on some websites/embed maps. At least more accurate data will be available for expert API users and our edits are useful for the community!
IMHO, this give us some boost to keep mapping in Latin America meanwhile waiting for Google Maps "layer(GMM)" full integration ;)

Cheers,
JPF

Hi JPF, yes! this is really good news.
I'm having some trouble because rendering of additions take so long to appear in the map. Not only with the "mapmaker true" layer activated, also in native mapmaker interface, and, makes difficult to work on new additions.
Have someone heard about a similar problem?
thanks
Gustavo

I agree we need to start giving Latin América more power or flexibility in mapping their features and adding their unique categories. I hope Google will continue the excellent work.

As always, as an RER for Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and LatAm, I don't mind answering any doubts anyone might have.

Hi Lori,

I've just added a location in Venezuela. I 've lived a few years there, so I will continue to add more if this works - I'm a new mapper:), so I'm not sure how it works.... So please review to be approved:

Thanks,

Zsuzsa

Hello from Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico.

As and avid mapper, I would love to help.

One of the things I've noticed, is the inability to create new sub-localities. The ones suggested by Map Maker they are either wrong, misspelled, or duplicated.

Saludos.

Hi Raul,

Mexico is open to mapping; I am an RER for Quintana Roo.

Most large political divisions are locked in the majority of countries; there is too much potential for abuse otherwise.  You are to instead go into Maps and use Report a Problem to fix them.

We get some good news from Panama,

We have full support from the government authorities here, to do all MapUp possible for local’s organization in combinations with all universities and local government offices, we have some sample here to start, http://internetparatodos.gob.pa/ more than 1000 Wi-Fi locations in Panama are mapping right now:  https://maps.google.com/maps?q=internet+para+todos&hl=en&sll=8.537981,-80.782127&sspn=2.949396,5.410767&t=h&hq=internet+para+todos&z=8
