It's been a while since I checked on Picasa for Linux and I'm
disappointed to say the least!

No Linux release/support since 3.0 - Seriously?

Apparently the reason is down to slow up take of 3.0 amongst Linux
users. Well the reason for this slow up take, Google, is simple ...
there's no native client for Linux. When a photo management tool is
sought for a Linux desktop, there are good native ones already around.
Why would a user want to run something under WINE???

The up take of Chrome under Linux surely demonstrates that there IS an
appetite for native versions.

Please pull the collective finger out and drum up a native client for
Linux.

You will be even more disappointed when you find that there has *never*
been a "linux release".

Nor will there be!

Hey Duncan... I have used those photo apps that are Ubuntu downloads from their software center, but Picasa does everything I wanted, that the others didn't fulfill. Save for the sending photos in email through my default email client Thunderbird....  Gmail works, so I'll keep Picasa, and the other stuff that comes along with the Wine apps, and hopefully someone will get the default mail clients working..

good luck.

Moreover, given that it's been quite some time since the Windows version of Picasa has been updated - the version I'm running on my 64-bit Ubuntu 11.04 box is «Version 3.8.0 (program version 117.4300, 0) Picasa for Linux» - I suspect that Google has taken a strategic decision to devote its resources to its Picnik cloud service instead. That would fit in with the pattern shown by certain other Google services, like, e g, the Toolbar, the Firefox version of which is no longer supported (and thus will not run on more recent versions of FF than 4.0.x). We'll have to see how long Picasa continues to be supported....

Hmph. So I need to learn to use gimp, pass the results to picasa,
shrink the files and upload them to the picasa website. One more step.
Worse things have happened. New i7 computer with slackware 13.37, but
I kept picasa 3.0 because I just don't want to deal with deb or rpm
files, which generally whine about something useless. Unless picasa 3.8
offers perspective correction, I see no need to go beyond the 3.0 I'm using.

Bev, Picasa 3.8 does offer several features not found in 3.0, but alas, no perspective correction. I've found it very easy to use, the only additional complication I've encountered is the fact that Wine must be downloaded - but the Ubuntu Programme Centre makes this a breeze - and Picasa opened in Wine before placing the icon on the top panel....

Let me take this opportunity to nuance my comment above about the Google Toolbar for Firefox not working in newer versions of Firefox - if one installs the FF add-on Add-on Compatibility Reporter 0.9, the GTF works like a charm ! In my case, I had to reboot to get it to display in my FF window....

Hey Guys,

i dont understand your problem. Picasa 3.8.x works flawless with wine
now. There's no need for the Linux Version anymore, it was only the
Windows Picasa shiped with a patched wine anyway! It seems this
patches are included with recent wine Versions.

However, Picasa is really stable on wine. Its even more stable then
most native applications. Givr it a try ;)

You can use digiKam for that. It has a batch conversion and shrink if
you want a native Linux apps. But I find Picasa easier to do batch
processing photos. I still keep Picasa 3.0 but I hope for an update.
But its look like Google is not doing anything now.

I personnaly use Picasa 3.8 on Ubuntu (and use Picasa on Ubuntu for a
while now) and my concerns are :
- All the "film" features are deactivated (or cannot be used)
- The "backup pictures" function is not available with a problem
"cannot connect to imapi2 cd engine"

The last problem is for me the biggest. I have now a big picasa
database (containing many hours & days of tagging persons) on my
Ubuntu workstation which is not officially supported, with a closed
format (no documentation which I could use to create converter
softwares), and which I cannot export on an other computer ...

So my request is for google : please either support that weird linux
version, develop a native one, or open-source the existing, so many
other volunteers could eventually support it !

Thanks

The format for tagging isn't a big secret.  In each directory, there's a file called .picasa.ini.  The file contains a list of all files in the directory, with coordinates for rectangles and a person identifier:

[proach@central Piglet]$ ls
index.html      Piglet-002.jpg  Piglet-004.jpg  Piglet-006.jpg  Piglet-008.jpg
Piglet-001.jpg  Piglet-003.jpg  Piglet-005.jpg  Piglet-007.jpg
[proach@central Piglet]$ cat .picasa.ini
[Piglet-002.jpg]
faces=rect64(43c42e80baba8d7f),495d05aab2b21ae4
backuphash=18595
[Piglet-003.jpg]
faces=rect64(38a84000ac6c9c5f),495d05aab2b21ae4
backuphash=44321
........
[proach@central Piglet]$ cd ~/.google/picasa/3.8/drive_c/Documents\ and\ Settings/proach/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/Google/Picasa2/contacts
[proach@central contacts]$ grep 495d05aab2b21ae4 contacts.xml
<contact id="495d05aab2b21ae4" name="Persons Name" display="Person" modified_time="2011-07-18T10:22:25-05:00" email0="em...@email.com" local_contact="1"/>
Each file has 0 or more rect64's in the .picasa.ini that describe the coordinates of a rectangle, followed by the contact id, which is stored in the contacts.xml file.
Thanks,
-P

Supprise. There is no "weird linux version", just the windows versions.
The so-called "for linux version(s)" were merely the windows version
packaged with a tweaked version of wine.

And I firmly believe that picasa is no longer an interesting project for
google, ie: dead and (almost)gone.
