Impossible to answer that, unfortunately. "It depends" is the closest honest answer you'll get.

If you just have a Java app that is working, you'll probably find that putting it on a normal VM will have the least impact on your required effort.  It's possible that it could work almost out of the box, but in the vast majority of cases you need to design for the datastore in mind or spend non-trivial effort retrofitting a SQL-oriented app to work with the key-value-plus-queries approach.  If you do any SELECT SUM(*) FROM X GROUP BY Y stuff, be prepared to hand-code all that.

To add to this answer, Google App Engine only supports a subset of Java. There are some Java services that GAE does not support (specifically, certain file writing capabilities). If you have a programmer friend, you can direct them to the GAE JRE whitelist at https://developers.google.com/appengine/docs/java/jrewhitelist 

If your program only uses classes from that list, you're fine. If not, you may need to rewrite certain parts of your code.
