I have reinstalled GC from scratch after a major crash (Mac, version 3 RC 3.2). After reimporting all of my rides (GC json files) and setting metrics up again I find that the "Route" info in Details | Workout does not appear in the Activities pane. If I edit the Route info, e.g subtly change the spelling, it does magically appear in the Activities pane. How can I force GC to do what it is meant to be doing in this situation?

cheers

So route is a metadata field, which pane are you referring to ?
Might be handy to show a screenshot to explain.

In the main Activities window, the pane on the left labelled Activities.

The sidebar !

Ah,ok, you need to open the 'column chooser’ from the sidebar menu (the hamburger symbol next to Activities in the sidebar).
Then drag and drop “Route” from the column chooser into the sidebar.

But if I do it that way the Route gets jammed in the same line as, in my case, Date and distance. By specifying that Route appears in the diary, via Prefs | Data Fields, it appears on the line below as you can see in my screenshot. I shall keep fiddling.

It sounds like you know what you need to do :)

In metadata config the 'Diary' checkbox means the metadata field in concatenated into the narrative description of the activity in the activity list and on the calendar.

If you add it to the sidebar with the column chooser it will be shown on the first row.

So,back to my original problem - the "route" metric refuses to be displayed in the narrative description until I edit it .e.g change the spelling or add a full stop. Remember these are reimported json files with the route metadata already in place.

Alternatively if I use your original suggestion and add route via the column chooser: unchecking the diary checkbox does not seem to remove the route from the narrative description in the activity list. Therefore I have 2 possible outcomes - Route displayed in 2 places or Route displayed in no places!

AFAIK this is because some metadata processing only takes place when metadata is edited but not when it is initially set, linked defaults are other case, I have a rule to set default running shoes when Sport="Run" that works when the Sport field is edited, but not when automatically set on import. I think it would be a nice to apply the same processing in both cases, but perhaps is too late for v3.2 ...

I will check, when the metadata config changes that should be reflected in the calendar text.
If not, that is a bug !

Yes, if one makes changes in Prefs | Data Fields there is no refresh of the data fields until one makes edits. This is slightly tedious 1 ride at a time. :)

I've recently did a similar change to include Notes in the calendar text and the solution for the change to apply to previous entries without the need to edit each of them was: exit GC, delete the cache (RideDB.json), restart, to force a rebuild.

Yeah, we're going to push a 4th release candidate out shortly, with a view to it being the last one before we release v3.2 formally.
