As we are approaching the v3.5 release and the source is mostly feature complete it is a good time to update translations, if someone is willing to collaborate no programming skills are required and here is a detailed instructive: https://github.com/GoldenCheetah/GoldenCheetah/wiki/Guidelines-for-translators

This is the status of currently supported languages, some of them have regular contributors but others are well behind, high number of unfinished and untranslated texts are indicators of those more in need of work.
Portuguese and Brazilian probably should be merged since probably would be better to have one more complete than two with minor differences but incomplete.

Status Update for v3.5:

At this time we have the following languages with translations completed: Simplified Chinese, German and Spanish

These languages have active translators and they are near completion (>90% translated): French, Italian and Swedish

These have more text untranslated but also have active translators: Dutch, Russian and Traditional Chinese

And these have not received an update in several years: Japanese, Portuguese and Czech

All contributions are welcome, specially for the less complete translations.

Thanks, Ale.

Hi,

I can't publish or answer anything on the forum GC anyway.

I've already send 2 emails at the group manager, nothing also.

I'm afraid I won't help neither.

Daniel.

Hello, I am new to open source and want to contribute to this project as a part of a course on open source at my University. I am Czech so I could do the Czech translations for now.

Hi Jan, that would be great!

We have a Czech translation from version 2.x, which you can use to start your work: https://github.com/GoldenCheetah/GoldenCheetah/blob/master/src/Resources/translations/gc_cs.ts

There are some guidelines about the process in https://github.com/GoldenCheetah/GoldenCheetah/wiki/Guidelines-for-translators, but feel free to contact me if you need help.

Thanks in advance, Ale.

Hi Miguel, you can translate using only the linguist tool and Resources/translations/gc_pt.ts file, having the full source code allows linguist to show the source code context, which may be helpful but it is not required.

Hi Miguel, download the source code from the same place and expand in a folder (there are .zip are .tar.gz archives available) and then use the linguist tool to open the Resources/translations/gc_pt.ts file, no need to import. Here is the doc for linguist: https://doc.qt.io/qt-5/linguist-translators.html

I'm started yesterday. One thing I noted is that some parts of the things to translate are grayout and sais no source code available. One of them have an error in the translaction that i can correct because is grayout

The grey parts without source code available are deprecated strings due to the code that used them was removed and likely replaced, don't worry about them.

They are easy to eliminate using the lupdate command, but if we left them their existing translations are used as hints for the same text in other places, which may be useful.

Once the translation is finished we can run lupdate to cleanup.

Hi,

In the translators guide it is said that for testing our translation we can generate .qm file in the Linguist and save it in the athlete's folder. This doesn't work for me though and I have to recompile each time I want to check something.
Second problem I have is that I cannot see the Diary tab in my dev version I compiled on my PC. In the 3.5 RC1 version I installed I see it without problems.

Any ideas?

Not in the athlete's folder but parallel to it, this is the intended meaning of "where your athlete's folders are" part in translations guidelines:

At startup GoldenCheetah uses the configured language (Tools->Options->Language to change, restart is mandatory) and it looks for a binary translation file (.qm file with the naming conventions listed above) in the "home" folder (where your athlete's folders are, see Help->About), if none is found the translation built in is used, so you need to put the .qm file generated by linguist File->Release on the home folder, restart GC and you are ready to test.

Great!

When you have a sustancial advance in your translation, even if not complete, we can add to the repo, the preferred way is to create a Pull Request on GitHub, but just attaching the ts file is acceptable.

With Jan’s contribution Czech is around 50% translated now, Maks also updated Russian which is around 80% finished now.

Only Japanese and Portuguese/Brazilian have not received updates in years, contributions are welcome!

Is there an easy way to start translating new language (Estonian) with Notepad++ or similar text editor *without" the need to install some third party software? I understand, that i can open those gc_language_code.ts files with it, but there is no english base file in source. Unfortunately the guidelines about something called Qt (which version? trial? open source? One web based intaller required abot 400 gigs?) and about something called linguist tool weren't clear enough to be near "so you can concentrate on the translation part".

Hi Maiko, yes, you can use Notepad++ or any other editor capable to use utf-8 encoding, I attached a gc_et.ts file generated for Estonian with all translations marked with:

<translation type="unfinished"></translation>

you advance replacing those by:

<translation>Estonian translation</translation>

I personally think it is easier to use Qt linguist, but it is your choice.

From https://www.qt.io/download-open-source it is possible to download a minimum installer and, using it, download and install only the components you need (barred Qt Creator, which is installed always, IIRC), alternatively there are some distributions -at least for windows- with just that tool to avoid installing Qt like https://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Home-Education/Qt-Linguist.shtml, but I have not used them.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Cheers, Ale.

I got things going when i found out that there is standalone linguist (https://download.qt.io/linguist_releases/) application available. So i started to use it instead of Notepad++. Unfortenately i'm unable to test, because the gc_et.qc file in C:\Users\maiko\AppData\Local\GoldenCheetah doesn't activate for some reason - GC seems to restart with it's default english gui.

Now i have question about those accelators like "&Download from device..." which after translation doesn't contain anymore letter 'D' so it can't remain the same. How to handle those, because like i understand, all of them which are in the same time in the screen must have different letter? Isn't there some automatic process to add those afterwards automatically without repeating?

The reason is for the Estonian language to be available in the language selection combo we need to add it to the source and make a new build, as a workaround you can rename your file using other language code, for example changing  gc_et.qm to gc_sv.qm and select swedish Tools > Options > General > Language for testing.

Qt linguist manual has some recommendations (https://doc.qt.io/qt-5/linguist-translators.html#changing-keyboard-accelerators) and there as validation test you can use.

I have some issues on testing: i have translated both of the phrases containing english word 'somewhat'. After that saved | released | restarted GC. All other GUI seems to use Estonian, but Activities | Overview | RPE still has all the levels in english, including "somewhat hard", even when all those are translated and marked with green checked mark on linguist.

BTW: my progress so far ca 4100 words of 22535

Yes, these string cannot be translated to any language currently, we need to fix that in code, which will happen when Overview is complete, for v3.5 it is more like a proof of concept, as explained in the introductory video.

BTW: my progress so far ca 4100 words of 22535

Good job!

What could be the reason for issue described below:

When GC is in English, Duration values in Trends -> Tracker tab (and on charts) are in hours. But when i test my partial translation, the values seems to be in seconds ("1" in english GUI is ca "3600" in my translation...)?
vs.

The same seconds vs hours issu on the other charts also:

The only time-date related changes i made so far was like MMM d, YYYY ->d. MMM YYYY.

And another example:
vs.

On translation just like additional string (seconds) appears but value is still in hours. Such complete string like visible - Kestvus (sekundit): - even doesn't excists, so for some reason GC substitutes there from multiple strings.

The key is partial: you need to translate all occurrences of the word “seconds”, all these examples are instances of the same issue in LTMPlot class: https://github.com/GoldenCheetah/GoldenCheetah/blob/cee6f0329a902f9c0dbd802211fcc8b226e06066/src/Charts/LTMPlot.cpp#L1032
