Would there be a member of the footbridge group who could go to the rescheduled Corpus Christi School Council of tomorrow night?

All you need to do is distribute copies of the attached (I'll print out for you if you wish) and, ideally, say a few compelling words about the proposal and listen to any comments that school council members might have. (It would be good if you could also ask whether they'd endorse the concept.)

I was originally going to give a presentation but the meeting of last week was cancelled and is now rescheduled for Tuesday when I cannot attend.  And Janice and Nick Masciantonio are presenting the footbridge proposal to the Immaculata School Council tomorrow night so they are not available.

BTW, the research (board transportation staff) shows that there are 70 CC students who could use the bridge.  Also, of significance to CC parents who live on the Glebe side, there are 67 students who could use the footbridge for going to Immaculata.  The point being that the footbridge - even if not immediately useful to Glebe parents of Corpus children - will be of use when the children start at Mac.

Heather, if it turns out that nobody is available perhaps you could tell me whom on the council I could take handouts to.

Subject: Fw: Parent council rescheduled meeting TUESDAY

Meeting is rescheduled for Tuesday - tomorrow.  I will be at Mac.  Can you send a representative to Corpus to at least give out handouts?  Heather

Hello all,

Monica is not available to meet on Wednesday this week, so we will have our rescheduled meeting on Tuesday, May 26th (yep, tomorrow!). Sorry for the shorter than usual notice – May is such a busy time in the school, and for all of us.

We’ll use the same agenda as last week.

Can anyone advise if they have children of babysitting age who can attend to watch the little ones? Thank you.

Also, Raquel and I will be bringing the sign-up sheet for the Teacher’s Lunch volunteers. We will have to discuss the date for it as well, as we have it currently scheduled for the same date at the BBQ and this may be too much for volunteers. Alternate date is Wednesday June 17th.

Thanks,

Kellie

John,
I will go if no one else is available. I leave for Toronto in a half-hour but return  by 5:30 tomorrow afternoon.

If I am the appointed, please email to confirm. And could you please print out and leave a reasonable supply of hte handouts between the doors at my house (13 Linden terrace) so that I can simply arrive and talk about the project?.

Perhaps you'd also remind me of the sc's president's name!
many thanks,

Allison D

Hi John,

I can’t do tomorrow, but did we ever get the numbers from Lady Evelyn for those living in the glebe for tonight?

Scott

Allison - that would be wonderful - we'll see if anybody else steps forward.  But if not, I'll confirm by email and deliver the goods to your place!  Heather has - as per separate email - provided the key CC contacts.

Allison - yes, if you'd be so kind to make the pitch to Corpus Christi School Council tonight.  I'll drop off copies of the backgrounder etc. at your place.

Last night, Nick Masciantonio, Scott McKenzie and myself presented to the Lady Evelyn Alternative School Council. They endorsed, unanimously agreeing that it would be a good idea for students and the communities.

Also tonight, Janice and Nick will present to the Mac School Council.  With that presentation we'll pretty well be done the community and "interest group" presentations except for OSCA and Glebe CI School Council (anybody have an idea when Glebe SC might be done and any other groups need to be met???)

Now to get beyond endorsements ... last night Scott suggested that our approach to NCC/PC should focus on seeking their support/involvement in getting the necessary approvals and funding, rather than simply asking them for endorsement.  Given the considerable and wide-spread support the footbridge has gained so far, it sounds like a good idea - I'll get you a draft soon.

cheers john

Hey all,
I was looking at a few numbers which I thought might useful in response to questions or as part of a presentation.

As I am sure you know, going from Clegg to 5th Avenue without a footbridge represents a 20 minute detour by foot (via Pretoria Bridge, from point to point = 1.8 kms).

To put this into 'car' terms, such a delay would represent an approximate 17 km driving detour within the city (@ 50 km/hr), while it would represent a 27 km detour for someone driving outside the city (@ 80 km /hr).

I thought such terms might be compelling when addressing people who do not often travel by foot - particularly those in the suberbs and rural areas (i.e. city or NCC representatives who live outside the city). It might be difficult for such persons to appreciate how much of an obstruction 1.8 kms is to people who do not, or cannot, drive to their destination.

Consider also circumstances when the pretoria bridge is up or blocked off for construction (which, by the way, creates a 3 km span between the Corktown and Bank Street access points). When the Pretoria Bridge is up or blocked off, cars can detour using the 417. Bikes and pedestrians obviously cannot and it adds a 30 minute detour by foot (between Clegg and 5th, via Bank, = 2.7 kms).

In 'car' terms, this delay represents approximately a 25 km detour within the city and a 45 km detour for someone travelling outside the city.

Perhaps these numbers have already been contemplated, but if not I hope they can be of assistance.

-Kurtis.

excellent points - I time the extra cycling the other day and it would save cyclists about 10 minutes per trip (20 per round trip) ... I'll put this in "car distances" as you did Kurtis.

I do this walk often to get to work. Boy I must walk slow. It takes me 30 minutes to do this walk on a good day (short legs? Or getting old??) On a bad weather day it can take me 40. So now calculate that! Good idea translate into car terms.
