As gitolite becomes more popular this may happen more often; hence
this email. Also, someone sent me private email saying I was too rude
to "myt" so I need to explain.

----

A long time ago when I started the list, I promised people it would be
low-traffic. My objective is that every *serious* user of gitolite be
on this list and at least read the subject line of every email. I
know what I do to high-traffic lists -- shunt the mails to a folder I
check once in a week or so.

Gitolite is security software. All software has bugs (see Djikstra)
and a bug in security software is a security hole. I would hate for
someone to miss an important security announcement because the noise
on the list drove them away or at least prevented them from seeing it
immediately.

Still, I don't mind long discussions (ok, in some cases "arguments",
and I freely admit my fault in most of those!). Upto a point I also
don't mind config issues and such. Even in the worst PEBCAK cases, we
could see that the poor guy was at least trying to do something -- the
*intent* was visible.

But people who say things that boil down to "I'm too busy to do the
bare minimum, so I expect you to pick up the slack" have no place
here.

PS: They're welcome on #gitolite if they must do things like that, by the way.

Keeping it short.

I would like it if we can have a separate group for security concerns for gitolite. I joined this group expecting only to see those kinds of mails.

Separating out a "talk" list is pretty common practice for open
projects. It might be worth considering, if it's not a huge bother.

It won't stop people from posting to the wrong group, of course. That's
a PEBCAK problem that R&D is still working out. ;)

Cheers.

Or a moderated -announce list for important, infrequent news for people
who don't want to wade through mundane topics.

OK that's 3 people so far, and pretty quickly after Jey's email too.

I created 'gitolite-announce' just now; anyone can join by sending an
email to gitolite-anno...@googlegroups.com.

You do NOT need to join that list if you are already on this one and
don't mind the traffic. Announcements will always be sent here
*also*. Discussions can only happen here.

I have one request/concern.

I don't know the answers to all the questions that come here. For
example, for http issues I rely on some of you folks on this list (you
know who you are!). LDAP is another example. There are probably
more.

I hope there won't be a mass exodus from this list to that one because
I sure do appreciate the help :-) If you feel you have the time to
look at it at least once in a while, please remain subscribed so you
can me with the support if possible.
