Hi,

I`ve just tried adding this "Git for Windows" Google group as +Cc to a "Git for Windows" related e-mail[1] on main Git mailing list, but it bounced back:

Hello ...,

We're writing to let you know that the group you tried to contact (git-for-windows) may not exist, or you may not have permission to post messages to the group. A few more details on why you weren't able to post:

 * You might have spelled or formatted the group name incorrectly.
 * The owner of the group may have removed this group.
 * You may need to join the group before receiving permission to post.
 * This group may not be open to posting.

I wasn`t exactly being a "member" of this group at the time, like explicitly joining the group, not sure if that would have fixed it, but even if so, is that really required...?

I`m thinking, even with me being a member here and my message coming through (and landing on this list), replies to it would still bounce back to all the others (not being members of the list), where assuming/forcing that every discussion participant is already a member of this group might be too optimistic, and eventually work against the group itself, decreasing traffic where it might have been appreciated.

Opinions? Was it actually some mistake of mine that caused the issue in the first place (other than not being a member of the group)?

Thanks, Buga

Yes, you have to be subscribed and yes, you have to send a first moderated
mail before subsequent mails come through.

The reason is that I am currently the only person moderating the mailing
list (and spam is a real thing, although it did become rarer since the
high times 3 years ago or so), and I also have to take care of the bug
tracker, and I also have to do most of the bug patching, so time is too
valuable to have a less restrictive mailing list.

Sorry,
Johannes

Yeah, unfortunately this makes it inappropriate for any Cc-ing - both
to point people elsewhere to a more suitable place here, but also to
make the group itself more active (and more visible) - as it would
cause posting bounce-back annoyance for any discussion participant
not being a member of the group.

Ironically, probably the most value would come exactly from bringing
those unaware of the group, thus (still) unsubscribed.

Even with what I said above, of course your standing point is totally
understandable, nothing to object there.

I might have offered a hand here, but (1) I`m really trying not to
take more responsibilities at the moment, and (2) it probably doesn`t
even have much sense, having me just coming out of the blue as far as
everyone else is concerned. Maybe one day... if I get to stick here
long enough :(

No worries, nothing to be sorry about, it`s as good as it can be, and
you`re doing more than excellent work already - and thank you for that.

If anything, I am sorry that I can`t be of more help (at the moment)...

Regards, Buga
