I see that API call, so does that mean that when a invoice.create is done, an email isn't sent - and we have to explicitly call invoice.sendByEmail?

That's a good question, I actually had to test it to be 100% sure of the answer myself. :)
You will have to call invoice.sendByEmail following an invoice.create call.
