Hi firefox-dev et al.,

TL;DR: (tell people to) use Firefox >=34 on OS X 10.10 (likely to be in
beta by the time 10.10 is released).

Longer version:

The internet is full of rumours that this month will see the release of
OS X Yosemite (likely in about 2 weeks), and so I figured I'd write up a
small update of where Firefox desktop are on that front.

NB: this post is explicitly NOT about the repackaging/signing work for
10.9.5/10.10, although from what I understand that is going well; This
is tracked in
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/mozilla.dev.platform/RGHGZuvQn24
.

Quick Firefox release schedule recap: we're releasing 33 in a week-ish,
and 34 end of November. 35 won't ship until January.

While 33 will run on 10.10 (excepting above-mentioned gatekeeper/signing
stuff), there are a bunch of changes in 10.10 which make it look a
little out of place. We're doing our best to update Firefox accordingly,
but this takes time. Theme/visual work is being tracked in
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1040250

A lot of this work landed or was uplifted for 34 already. What follows
is a summary of the remaining list of things which I hope we can still
get fixed for / uplifted to 34. Please reply here (fx-dev) if you think
there are important things missing from this list or have other
questions/concerns.

Needing uplift:
(front-end) https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1044595 + deps
(front-end) https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1075672

(platform) https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1045217
(platform) https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1059991

Things I'm hopeful we'll still fix as well as uplift for 34:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1045213
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1062801
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1069658
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1075653
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1077358

There is other work we would like to get done (particularly titlebar
translucency, as well as more minor native widget styling/animation
issues) but realistically speaking, I don't expect that to still make 34.

Gijs

There's also the following bug, though I'm not sure how serious it is:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1059424 ("[10.10] WARNING: The Gestalt selector gestaltSystemVersion is returning 10.9.0 instead of 10.10.0.")

I'll try to deal with it this week (either by fixing it, or by deciding it's not serious and postponing it).

I'll also try to deal with the following this week:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1069658 ("[10.10] The slide-down titlebar in fullscreen is transparent")

I'm unaware of any other "major" bugs.

And by the way, thanks Gijs and Markus for taking this stuff on. I simply haven't had the time to deal with it myself.

Releng and A-Team have also decided to abandon our efforts to support
10.9 in continuous integration and will instead be focusing on 10.10.

We'll have new hardware to support the platform sometime early in
2015. We'll be looking for everyone's help to get tests greened up in
finite time so the results can be exposed to all developers. This is
largely what stalled our efforts with 10.9 support.

Our tracking bug for this is https://bugzil.la/1079468 if you want to
follow along.

cheers,
