Firebug 2's Net panel does search but not filter. You may use the Firebug extension NetExport to export the data into a HAR file. This file can be filtered manually afterwards and displayed within a HAR viewer like the one on softwareishard.com.

Does the new Firebug (the one based on built-in FF tools) improve upon Firebug's current, limited search and filtering abilities? I don't have time to try out the pre-release myself, but I'm still curious about what functional improvements it may (hopefully) have...

Firebug 3 filters the network requests instead of searching in them.
Testing the behavior can easily be done without having Firebug 3 installed. Just press Ctrl+Shift+Q to open the devtools' Network panel. At the bottom you'll find the input field to filter the requests.
