How much does Firebug depends on Firefox?

It's possible or are there plans to release an extension for Chrome or
other browsers than Firefox?

I tried Firebug lite but's not comparable with a browser extension and
I'm really looking forward to switch to Chrome, the only reason
stopping me right now is Firebug. There is no par to this extension, I
love it and will stick with Firefox for as long as necessary just
because of it.

We're planning to merge Firebug and Firebug Lite source code as much as possible. This also means, that Firebug Lite will get some more of the features its "big brother" is having. Though this process will surely still take quite some time.
