I'm new with Firebug. It's fantastic.
I make a website with apache and MySQL so my website starts with
127.0.0.1
When I use Firebug in the right part of the screen I can see which css
I have to change.
But I can't find the name of the file in the left part of the screen
to change something real.
Where can I find the name of this file?
Thanks,
Zet Weeh

I don't know what you mean by left an right part of the screen, but if
I...

1) open e.g. this page: http://www.softwareishard.com/har/viewer/
2) select the HTML panel (and the <body> element)
3) select the Style panel

... I can see that .harBody comes from harViewer.css (line 1)

Honza, I guess that's not what he meant.

Zet, we have some specific Firebug terminology you can use to make yourself clear.
I think you're talking about the HTML panel and you want to know the name of the file containing the HTML, right? If so, you should note, that the Node View of the HTML panel is a live view of what is shown in the page. So it can be influenced by JavaScript inside your page or inline e. g. via clicking on an HTML attribute inside the Node View. The original source code (as you see it in the source code view of Firefox) can be seen inside the Response tab of the first request inside the Net Panel.
Also we put a lot of other information together in our wiki on getfirebug.com. So I advise you to inform yourself about Firebug's functionality there.

Greetings

Sebastian

Hoi Sebat\stian
I think you're right.
I have a problem: when I open your links I get a 404 message.
Hoi Sebat\stian
I think you're right.
In Dutch ther is no 'Response' Button and there is no word that looks
alike in the translation.
Is it the third or fourth button from the left?

And there's another problem:
when I open your links I get a 404 message.
What to do?

Thanks for your help

The Dutch word for it should be Antwoord and it's either the second or third tab from the left (depending on the request).

All links? Well, the link to the main page of the wiki is the following:

http://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Hope, that works.

Greetings from the neighbor country Germany! :-)

Please better post answers here instead of writing me privately, otherwise other people having the same problems can't follow it.

Hoi Sebastian

Greetings from Holland; it's nice weather!

In my toolbar I see: Wissen (delete), vasthouden (hold), alles(all),
html, css, js, xhr, afbeeldingen (images), flash.
I think I need to change something, but what?

The links don't work in IE. In Firefox I can read them.

Bye, Zet Weeh

I see I should have posted a screenshot to make it clearer what I mean. :-) It's not the panel toolbar, but it's visible when you expand the request.
Example: When you go to http://getfirebug.com/ you'll see a lot of requests inside the Net panel. When you expand the first one by clicking on it, you'll see the Response tab (or in your case Antwoord). Click it and you'll see the following:

Please read the wiki article about the Net panel again. There I tried to explain the things in more detail. If something is still unclear afterwards, please let me know, so I can adjust the documentation.

Hoi Sebastian
I read the manual; I foud the tab 'Antwoord', I can change in Firebug,
but.....I still don't know, which file I need to change it for always.
Does this occur because I use 127.0.0.1 with PHP en MySql on my own
computer?
I'm new and a dummy so maybe it's impossible or very easy what I want.

Hallo Zet,

Hoi Sebastian
I read the manual; I foud the tab 'Antwoord', I can change in Firebug,
but.....I still don't know, which file I need to change it for always.
I am not quite sure yet what exactly you want to reach.

Does this occur because I use 127.0.0.1 with PHP en MySql on my own computer?
I can say, that Firebug doesn't change the files on your server by default. Therefore you need extensions like FireFile or cssUpdater to upload the changes you made in Firebug to your server.

I'm new and a dummy so maybe it's impossible or very easy what I want.
Generally it is not possible to apply the HTML changes you made in Firebug to your PHP scripts. The reason is, that Firebug just sees the HTML output and not the structure of the scripts behind it. So e. g. a PHP script can include different other files via require() or include(), but the browser - and therefore also Firebug - doesn't know about these includes.
So that's why you should use an IDE like e. g. Eclipse or NetBeans to edit your files.

Please let me know, If that was what you meant.

Greeting from Holland

Best regards,

Sebastian

Hoi Sebastian
Your answer is clear: I understand I'm changing the HTML I see and
this is a part of a PHP-file and the name of that file you can't see
in Firebug.
So what I want is impossible.

But I also understand tha I can change my files on the server without
knowing the name of that file using Firefile and cssUpdate.
I never worked with that programs but I suppose you need to know the
login and password otherwise everybody can change your files.
By the way: thanks for your patience with my questions.
Greetings,
Zet Weeh

Hoi Sebastian
Your answer is clear: I understand I'm changing the HTML I see and
this is a part of a PHP-file and the name of that file you can't see
in Firebug.
Good.

So what I want is impossible.
Yes, unfortunately.

But I also understand tha I can change my files on the server without
knowing the name of that file using Firefile and cssUpdate.
I never worked with that programs but I suppose you need to know the
login and password otherwise everybody can change your files.
I have to admit, that I also didn't try them for real yet, but of course you will need login information to synchronize the data between Firebug and the source files. If you need more info about these Firebug extensions, I would suggest you to read their documentation and if that's not enough, contact their authors.

By the way: thanks for your patience with my questions.
You're welcome. I'm happy, that I could help you. Feel free to ask more questions, but please always make sure you read our documenation carefully first, especially in case you found a bug or want to suggest a feature.
