Just back from class and I see this thread asking for notes on the experience of using Fargo 2. I'll type up a few things about what I've experienced.
I made a little test outline, akakensmith, and it powered up in a flash. It seems to be running on all cylinders. It's so nice to have Fargo underway like this again. I hope someday to write a little post about why I got hook on outlining--it's hard for me to explain, but there it is.
It's very good for morale to see Dave's occasional reference to poet-level instructions. I happen to have an MFA degree in poetry writing, so it feels personal, even though I know it's a cultural reference that's been out in the world for a while.
I have spent some time with the docs but not enough to find out when and why I am supposed to use the render button. I need to go back and look around and find the answer.
I thought I'd be able to get older outline dates to appear in the "smith" public outline, where they were previously published in either Fargo or WordPress, but I'm not sure I have figured it out. It seems like I have to strip any WordPress attributes out of each entry and resave as outline type, for one thing. Not sure, but so far it seems like each entry has to be changed.
I tried to copy exactly the menu command from the sample Kim outline so as to update the header on my public outline and didn't manage it yet, not sure why.
I liked Fargo with a little narrower column last year but I haven't had time to work out the customization I'd need to put in place to go back to that. Probably mainly a matter of time to dig around and try things from the docs.
I saw the server for poets post when I got out of class tonight and will give it a close look. Fargo is important to me for several reasons, but one is certainly Dave's commitment to the widest technical access possible, with an eye on not just the elegance of the coding but also the foundations of democracy.
That's what comes to mind right now...many thanks.
