A silly looking, but informative survey of how various critters do it. It should be clear from this that there is no inherent gender orientation defined by the cosmos, beyond some loose probabilistic association of conditions and possible consequences. The Spotted Hyena in particular (second to last) is an example of much larger and more aggressive females.
"The hierarchy is so strong that adult males are even scared of female puppies, and for good reason. Adult daughters show kindness towards their fathers by being less violent to them than to other males."
