What do you mean by "3rd party hosting server"? All that tells us is
that someone else is hosting your server.

My feeling on this is that we don't really take shared server users seriously.  Here are 3 reasons I would never used a shared server:

  1. They are exploited constantly.
  2. You never know what resources (Memory) is going to be available.
  3. VMs cost less (EC2 etc.).

Etherpad should be shown the respect it deserves ergo it should have access to the resources it needs.  We(or I) discourage shared servers and would encourage you to find a new home.

Sorry if that's a bit harsh but the reality of the situation is that shared servers might be fine for "barbie doll fan websites" but not for bringing people together in real-time over the web.

Control your environment before it controls you. :)

I'd like to tag on to the original question. I am on a shared server and would love to install EtherPad Lite. All the installation guides I have found were either for Windows or a Linux variant. Is there any way to install EPL on a shared server?

Thanks for any feedback.

I think they mean they do not have root access to the server that they want to host this service from.

They are most likely working from a control panel that is hosting on another server.

OK, thanks. So I take it that it doesn't work...or would it if one didn't care about showing Etherpad the respect it deserves? I mean, points 1 and 2 are factually wrong. :-) Still, I'll take a look into other options.
