22 April – The Earth Day



The Greens Movement of Georgia / Friends of the Earth Georgia and the
Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia jointly
organized a large-scale cleanup action within the framework of the campaign
"Clean Up Georgia”, dedicated to "Earth Day". During the action, lake Lisi
and new hippodrome surrounding areas were cleaned up. “Earth Day” was first
celebrated globally in 1970 and millions of people came out to protect our
planet. This is one of the largest environmental campaigns and unites
international community to protect their living environment through various
environmental events. On this day worldwide environmental activities are
carried out to turn Earth Day into a day of action. Since 1990 the Greens
Movement of Georgia / Friends of the Earth-Georgia celebrates Earth Day on a
regular basis through carrying out large-scale actions.



This year, during the week of "Earth Day" is planned to carry out cleanup
activities throughout the country, which will be coordinated by local
coordinators of the Greens Movement of Georgia in the regions. In addition
to Tbilisi, cleanup actions will be held in different regions and
municipalities of Georgia.



Clean up action in Tbilisi took place in the vicinity of Lake Lisi and New
Hippodrome area. Along with the event organizers, the First Deputy Minister
of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia Mr. Solomon
Pavliashvili, Deputy Minister Ms. Ekaterine Grigalava, representatives of
National Environmental Agency, representatives of different Departments and
Services of the Ministry; State Minister of Georgia on European and
Euro-Atlantic Integration Mr. Victor Dolidze, representatives of the
Ministry of Internal Affairs, Head of Swedish Development Cooperation/
Deputy Head of Mission Ms. Molly Lien, representatives of Swedish Embassy,
representatives of nongovernmental organizations implementing project "Clean
Up Georgia" (Phase III), employees of the Department of Environmental
Protection of Abkhazia, pupils and teachers of Tbilisi public schools №107,
№79 and № 85, as well as pupils of St. Nino Orthodox School of Georgian
Patriarchate and representatives of various governmental and
non-governmental organizations took part in the clean up action. Nearly 700
people took part in the action. As a result 3 ha area has been cleaned up
and 12 m3 of waste was collected and taken to the landfill by the
representatives of Cleaning Service. The “Clean Up Georgia” campaign is
carried out within the framework of the project “Clean Up Georgia” (Phase
III) and implemented by NGO consortium Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of
the Earth Georgia, Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis, “Ecological
Awareness and Waste Management” with financial support of Swedish Government
and in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources
Protection of Georgia and Solid Waste Management Company.
