“Clean Up Georgia - Phase III” Project

Meeting in Telavi Municipality

(Kakheti region)

NGO Ecological Awareness and Waste Management (EAWM) continues awareness
raising meetings in Kakheti region. On 19 July 2016, EAWM held a meeting in
the city of Telavi within the framework of the ‘Clean Up Georgia – Phase
 III” Project.

The aim of the meeting was to inform Telavi Municipality on the hazardous
waste (in particular, chlorine/chemicals) on the territory of Georgia and
its negative impact on human health and the environment.

The representatives of Telavi Gamgeoba (Administrative Body of the
Municipality) subordinate administrative units (22 participants) attended
the meeting.

Project coordinators delivered a presentation on “Pollution of the
Environment by Hazardous Waste (Chlorine) and its Negative Impact on Human
Health and Environment” and discussed the threats caused by chlorine (among
them, cases on the territory of Georgia), utilization methods, security
measures and issues related to HW management problems, the role of the
government, prevention, etc.

The meeting participants were informed about chlorine cylinders and
containers detected on the territory of Kvareli Municipality (in the
villages of Shilda and Gremi), damaged chlorine container on the territory
of Khulo Municipality and potential threats. In addition, participants
discussed the negative impact of expired chemicals on human health existing
in school laboratories

The meeting raised interest among participants, who expressed their
readiness to cooperate with the project. Project coordinators distributed
EAWM flyers and Emergency Response Communication Plans among the
participants of the meeting.

The project “Clean Up Georgia-Phase III” is implemented by a Consortium of
NGOs “Ecological Awareness and Waste Management”, Georgian Society of Nature
Explorers “Orchis” and “Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the
Earth -Georgia” with the full financial support of the Swedish Government.
