Controlled Wood National Risk Assessment for Georgia – Public Consultation

In recent years, the interest in voluntary forest certification has grown
in Georgia, especially towards the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) scheme.
FSC is a globally recognized independent certification system in the field
of forestry. Purchasing wood products certified under FSC scheme, carrying
the respective label, means supporting sustainable forest management.

FSC Controlled Wood system

FSC introduced the concept of Controlled Wood in 2004. Controlled Wood (CW)
system is a step (relatively easily achievable) towards voluntary forest
certification.

CW is the wood, which is NOT:

1) Illegally harvested.

2) Harvested in violation of traditional and human rights.

3) From forests in which high conservation values (HCVs) are threatened by
management.

4) From forests being converted to plantations and non-forest use.

5) From forests in which genetically modified trees are planted.

Wood and wood products produced through the forest management which fulfils
the requirements of all these five categories, may obtain CW status. The
process of assessment whether forest management quality (and, respectively,
wood produced in this forest) meets the above-mentioned five requirements or
not, is called CW Risk Assessment.

FSC-based CW National Risk Assessment in Georgia

FSC has developed uniform process with requirements for assessing whether
wood produced within a certain country or region satisfies the criteria of
CW or not. The process is called Controlled Wood National Risk Assessment
(CW NRA). The CW NRA for Georgia is conducted by the working group
registered in Georgia by FSC and coordinated by WWF-Caucasus Programme
Office.

The initial version of this assessment has been completed for Georgia.
Public consultation of the assessment documents will commence on 30 June
2017 and end on 30 August 2017. Please, kindly provide your comments during
that period. All applicable documents are available at the website
<http://wwf.panda.org/what_we_do/where_we_work/black_sea_basin/caucasus/tenders/?302351/Controlled-Wood-National-Risk-Assessment-for-Georgia--public-consultation>
of WWF-Caucasus Programme Office

The comments can be provided on three files - summary of the CW NRA, full
version of the CW NRA and framework document on the identification of
forests with High Conservation Values (HCVs). Further information is
provided in the files containing introduction about FSC certification, CW
system, ongoing work in Georgia and planned steps in this regard as well as
FSC requirements on NRA (FSC-STD-40-005 V3-0 EN).
