Waste Management Problems in Kakheti Region

.

Georgian Society of Nature Explorers “Orchis” organized meetings in
Sagarejo, Gurjaani, Sighnaghi, Kvareli, Dedoplistskaro, Lagodekhi and
Akhmeta Municipalities, Kakheti Region. The following waste management
issues were revealed during the meetings:

*         Necessity supply sufficient number of containers and trucks for
waste collection;

*         Availability of clean-up services for entire population of the
Region; waste collection and removal are not ensured in majority of
villages;

*         Difficulties with raising of waste collection fee;

*         Necessity to enforce legal liabilities for waste dumping;

*         Presence of uncontrolled (illegal) dumpsites in rural areas and
adjacent to food markets;

*         Problem related to the construction waste management, and
specifically, environmental pollution with construction waste;

*         Necessity to implement waste separation and minimization measures
(e.g. composting) and estimation of their cost-effectiveness;

*         Need to adopt and enforce a law that ensures proper management of
organic waste generated from wineries;

*         Necessity to implement waste management system in Tusheti;

*         Shortcomings of the existing waste management system: problems
with the involvement of private sector and lack of information;

*         Lack of information about existing waste recycling facilities;

*         Shortage of information on the current legislation and National
Waste Management Strategy and Action Plan;

*         Shortage of information about international funds;

*         Ensuring the involvement of population and mass media in waste
management process by the local self-government, and necessity to comprise
all age-groups and especially school students by awareness raising measures.
