Brainstrorming Session in Georgia on Global Forest Watch | ||||
Global Forest Watch concept is getting very popular nowadays, as a transparent online forest monitoring platform that provides unbiased and up-to-date information about the forest sector. Built on a geographic information system (GIS) platform, the web portal aims to strengthen forest management and land use planning by bringing information on all major land use categories onto the same standardized platform.
In Georgia, the underlying forest atlas database is supported and kept up-to-date by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resource Protection (MoENRP) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), releasing new information as it becomes available via the mapping application. Also, the non-governmental sector, academia, scientific research institutions are partners of the project, preparing various interesting proposals on use of GFW technologies in Georgia.
Recently, all interested stakeholders participated in a workshop in Bulachauri, Green Center near Tbilisi, where they could discuss both GFW global initiatives application in Georgia, as well as real daily needs of the Ministries, National Forestry and Protected Areas Agencies, local rangers and farmers, non-governmental advocacy organizations and biodiversity think-tanks, school teachers and tutors, agriculture planning specialists, etc.
Interesting discussions and group working led to a bundle of new ideas and inspirations for the project team. The proposals of participants included ideas, that would be beneficial for protected areas managers, forest license holders, agriculture planners, non-governmental organizations and grassroots communities.
The Global Forest Watch Team in Georgia is always open to new ideas and proposals from any organization in Georgia. For more information, please contact National Coordinator Katya Nakashidze
