Hi List and specifically Maria-

The group has a couple of new members, one of which is looking for information on John Phillips who m. Rachel Arrendell. He would be a distant cousin for you Maria. I don't know if you ever emailed with him before. Here is some information about how he connects into John Phillips and Rachel.

Hello, I am the 3rd great grandson of John Phillips and Rachel Arnold of Johnson County, TN. I am descended through their son Jarret Phillips and Mary L.C. Jones, their daughter Carrie Phillips and Richard Franklin Osborne, their son Franklin W. Osborne and Ruth N. Riddle, their daughter Callie Ann Osborne (married to Cliff Dunn) is my mother. My great uncle Jack Osborne (son of Carrie Phillips is the last of Carrie Phillips Osborne and Richard Franklin Osborne's children still living. I am trying to find more information about our family for him as well as myself. I would greatly appreciate any information you have and look forward to your reply.

His name is Charles and he is on the list. I was having a moment, actually a week and knew I recognized the name and location, but the Arnold was throwing me. There is some information on the web about this John being from Chester Co., PA and marrying a Rachel Arnold, but I know that is incorrect. I pointed out that since John and Rachel named a son Jarrett is a pretty good indication that she was the daughter of Jarrett Arrendell.

Charles, you can fill in what you know.

Nancy, thanks for the brain jump start.

Tom

What are the dates for the Arrendell?  There was an early Arendal/Arrendell etc family in Dobbs co - one of mine - and we have no clue where they were from.  For years it was written they descended from the current Duke of Norfolk - in your wildest dreams - but the Duke paid to resore the small cemetery of William Arrendall outside of Kinston.

just curious.

Not a chance.

There appears to be several generations of this name, especially William, in old Dobbs, now Lenoir Co, NC.
One William died with an existing Will in 1822 - no male line although he did have a son James who appears to have died early - several daughters.

We think he was the son of William given the dates we have and there may have been an even earlier William.  We know there was also a Nathan b 1767, probably the uncle of the one who died in 1822.  He went to Ga.  Both Nathan and William were on the 1780 Dobbs Co Tax list but only William on the 1769 list.  There was also an Anthony ca 1746, an Abner ca 1756, Rebecca with children 1758 - 1765 (we think she was the widow of William).  We know one of the William's was there by 1738 when he received land in Craven Co.

There was a William ca 1671 in Somerset Co, Md but we have not really followed up.

There was also an Arrendall family in Northampton Co, NC - think that is right - maybe a little later.  Northampton would be more of a point of orgin for Granville than old Dobbs.

Thanks for the information - just curious.  It is not a run of the mill name.

Maria,

It's great to be in touch with you. I am excited about finding out more about this side of my family.

I have written down information I got from the ENC website stating that the parents of Rachel Arnold Phillips were Jarrett Arrendell Arnold and Laodicea Reece. Do you know if this is correct?

My 2nd great grandfather was Jarrett Phillips who was a brother to your 2nd great John W. Phillips.

By the way I live in Johnson County, TN and grew up just down the road from the Phillips Cemetery on Antioch Road in Johnson Co.

Thanks for your help and I am glad to have met one of my Phillips cousins.
