Eliminating property taxes would raise land values even more, exacerbating housing costs.

Presently people pay twice: once on their mortgage, once for income and sales taxes. But Land Value Taxation (rent recovery throughout the economy) would replace sales and income taxes and replace mortgage payments on the land part of mortgages. People would only pay once, they would pay a land tax, which would cut their monthly payments in half.
