DDA kicks off work on football stadium (The Hindu)

After much delay, the Delhi Development Authority has fast-tracked work on the 62-acre football stadium in south west Delhi’s sub-city of Dwarka which will cater to the city’s need for a world class football stadium with FIFA standards.

The stadium to come up in Dwarka Sector 19 has been planned with a seating capacity of 18,000 persons and would meet FIFA standards for play field with a length of 105 m and width of 68 metres. The project had been pending for over four years now.

“The work concerning the football stadium in Dwarka is on fast track. Drawings etc have been done already,” said DDA Vice-Chairman Balvinder Kumar.

However, another senior DDA official clarified that the work has been fast tracked but the stadium is not to cater to Under 17 FIFA world Cup to be held in 2017.

“The stadium is Dwarka is not for the Under 17 world cup, for which DDA Commonwealth Games village sports complex has already been identified for practising. Otherwise, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is the chosen site for the matches to be played in Delhi,” the official said.

The site is next to Football Federation of India and can be approached from Sector 9 and 10 metro stations and is opposite to Bharat Vandana.

The stadium will have three football fields, one in the main stadium, one within the athletic track and one in the practice field.

The orientation of all the outdoor play fields has been taken in the north-south direction to avoid morning and evening sun glare.

Besides the football field, the agency would also provide for volleyball courts, athletic track with seating capacity for 1,000 spectators, four mini football fields, tennis, basketball and lawn tennis courts.
