DDA to build more flats, sports academies in Dwarka (Hindu)

In a bid to promote world-class living, the Delhi Development Authority has made Dwarka its focus. It is all set to add two international-level sports academies and high-income group (HIG) and middle-income group (MIG) flats to the sub-city.
It is also mulling roping in international agencies for conceptualising the sports academies.
The DDA will construct 214 HIG and 352 MIG houses in Sector 19-B. “The houses are not in the 2016 project. Their contract has already been given to Simokex infrastructure,” said a DDA official.
About the sports academy, DDA vice-chairman Balvinder Kumar said, “We already have two sports complexes in Dwarka but we had land available at two sites. So we thought why not have two sports academies there and provide facilities for weightlifting etc, which are lacking in Delhi. These academies will be run by national and international players and coaches,” said Mr. Kumar.
Mr. Kumar said the project is at an advanced planning stage and the DDA will invite Expression of Interests within a week and international agencies too can come in for conceptualisation. The project is expected to take three to four years for completion.
The two academies will be established at Sector 8 and 19. A senior DDA official said Dwarka already has a golf course in Sector 24 and two sports complexes in sectors 17 and 19.
He informed that “one of the academies would be largely dedicated to indoor Olympic sports like wrestling, boxing and weightlifting which would assist in developing local talents from nearby areas like Najafgarh.”
The other academy would have huge four to five ‘maidaans’ for football and cricket, like in olden days near Red Fort, and not just one field as is the case with many existing facilities. The academies will have swimming pools, medical facilities, seminar halls, classrooms, physiotherapy centres, fitness centre and a library.
