DJB plans 20 MGD waste water treatment plants

In order to provide efficient water and wastewater services to the residents of Delhi,Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is in the process of commissioning of newly constructed 20 MGD Waste Water Treatment Plant at Pappankalan.

According to a DJB official, the plant has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 243 crores with the aim of trapping the sewage from Palam and TD-II drain before they join Najafgarh drain and treating sewage before discharging it into the Najafgarh drain.

"Commissioning of the 20 MGD Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) at Pappankalan will ensure that all the Waste Water that flows in the drain is first treated and only clean treated effluent is discharged into the river course thus contributing towards abatement of pollution in the river Yamuna," said the official.

He added that based on advanced technology, the plant functions on high rate clarifier with combined biologically flooded filters as these have the advantage of having an environment-friendly smaller footprint. "The Waste Water Treatment Plant at Pappankalan is based on activated sludge process with tertiary treatment. The treated effluent will be of high quality parameters and both the bio-logical oxygen demand and total suspended solids will be less than 10 mg/litre," stated the official.

The plant has a provision to generate power from bio-gas.The Wastewater Treatment Plant will be operated with automation system using PLC based software (SCADA) system.

"Presently, the plant is commissioned for treatment of sewage. The other units for sludge digestion, power generation and conversion of sludge into manure will be commissioned by December,2015.Around 9 lakh people living in the Uttam Nagar, Dwarka, Palam and Bijwasan Assembly constituency area, i.e., those area bounded by Pankha Road, Riwari Railway line, Najafgarh Road and Najafgarh Drain will be benefitted from the commissioning of the plant as sewerage facilities will be made available to them and impose hygienic conditions in the area," added the official.
