Dear Sir,

Sub: Power Savings.

Refer your recent comment about 10% economy in electricity consumption may lead to savings of Rs.50,000 crores. While we have alternate usage of the resources saved, a bigger threat is environment because still a lot of electricity is produced thru thermal technology generating a lot of pollution. Without going into technicalities we wish to forward a few thoughts to grab ‘low hanging fruits’ related with savings of electricity:

(i)           The entire north-east is privileged to have sun light earlier than rest of India. However, it is under stood that a lot of these sun rays are not being used as a source light. The office & college timings of the area are not aligned to avail benefit of this light. The office timings in the region are at par with rest of India hence leading to a mis-match with the nature around. Hence our obvious request would be to pre-pone office timings in the region by 60 to 90 minutes, so as to reduce their dependency on artificial light. Further, with same logic other areas of country like Rajasthan & Gujarat may also be reviewed to push half an hour later or as may be appropriate.

(ii)          Now-a-days many of the house hold electronic equipment are coming without any on-off switch and these remain on stand-by mode. This system is leading to waste of energy. Please take appropriate action for these equipments to have on-off switch.

(iii)         A lot of electricity is being wasted by un-regulated street lights. There are abundant examples in Delhi itself where with following 2 ways huge power is being wasted:

(a)  Streets Lights working when these are not required and

(b) Duplication of lights

It’s a common scene in Delhi where one can find these lights working early evening & late morning when these are not required. In addition, there are duplication happening at many places – with high mast lights being a permissible expenditure from MLA/MP fund – these are affixed liberally without actually assessing the need of it. As a proof I attach a few photographs. I have earlier written to LG, Secretary (Power) but nothing has happened. Delhi being a big metropolis with lakhs of high power lights glowing the city, savings could be large. The high masts are even bigger power gutter. Request a thorough energy audit of street lights be ordered to avoid wastage of energy.

(iv)         We all know that LED lights consume much less power as compared to even CFL lights besides emitting negligible heat. Request transform all street lights & public offices on LED lights to make huge savings. The usage of LED lights is not taking-off because of cost factor. Request Govt. to come out with appropriate incentive scheme to promote usage of LED lights.

It is hoped that all the above factors put-together may lead to substantial power savings.

Please acknowledge. Thanks,

Yours faithfully,
