Traffic issues on Dwarka Link Road (HT)

Dwarka Link Road that connects the sub city with NH-8 is one of the three main entry and exit points of Dwarka. As a result, this point not only sees too much traffic, but also has many traffic related issues.

Representatives of Dwarka Forum (DF), a resident body of Dwarka, had a site visit recently along with officials of Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to discuss issues on Dwarka Link Road-coming out of the underpass Sector 21 towards NH-8. Many traffic issues were raised by the DF team. The DDA officials promised to take up these issues with the traffic police so that action could be taken at the ground level.

The DF team pointed out the corners of first left cut to enter service road from main carriageway after crossing the underpass at Bijwasan, while approaching NH-8, are sharp at a 90% angle. As a result during peak hours it takes time for vehicles to turn so as to enter the service road. The corners of this cut needs to be smoothened so that vehicles could move at a faster pace and reduce waiting time, the DF team adds.

After the aforementioned first cut, there is a red light on main carriageway. After crossing this red light, there is second cut on the left side to enter service road. When there is red light here (T-point), the traffic waits and keeps increasing.

The DF team says if this second cut facilitating entry to the service road is shifted before the red light, it would allow vehicles to enter the service road and thereby avoid waiting at the red light. It was pointed out as this is a case of replacement of cut there will be no loss to greenery.

It was also pointed out on Dwarka approach road (from Palam flyover) recently one overhead signboard has been fixed by DDA to indicate Terminal 1. The arrows indicating direction on this board require fine tuning as the existing arrows are not perfect and may confuse motorists.

While heading towards the underpass, after crossing the Sector 21 metro station, there is a T-point before taking left turn towards the underpass. This T-point sees heavy traffic and also works as entry and exit gate for Dwarka. The DF team requested an overhead signboard be placed here to indicate direction for the airport, NH-8, Kapashera and Gurgaon.

Similarly, on this stretch from the aforesaid T- point till Sambhalkha T-point, there is no signage indicating the name of road. The DDA officials were urged to install appropriate signage indicating the road's name.

The DF team observed during peak hours, there is slow movement of traffic from above the T-point till the underpass-hardly 200-metre-stretch.

There is one entry cut on each side of the road to approach the service roads from main carriageway. It has been felt that road surface on this stretch is not smooth and full of potholes. Therefore, it is suggested re-carpeting be done on this portion so that vehicles can move briskly.

While taking a left turn towards underpass from above T-point there is a slip road for this movement. While the main carriageway to approach this left turn is a three-lane road, the left turn slip road is a two-laner. As a result, there is always a beeline of cars waiting to take a left turn.
