Mob controls DA tank; IGI, Dwarka go dry.
Supply resumed after days.

NEW DELHI: Large parts of Dwarka and IGI Airport went without water for most of the past week after a mob from Madhu Vihar and Rajapuri areas practically took over a command tank in Dwarka and forcibly diverted water to their colonies.

Locals reported that the residents of these areas, armed with thick wooden sticks, were visiting command tank 2 in Dwarka every day for the past week and threatening the Delhi Development Authority staff stationed there.

"Several of us witnessed this happening and were unable to do anything since the people were armed. They were forcibly diverting water meant for Dwarka and the Airport to their areas. We complained to DDA on several occasions and finally police had to be called. Due to this, most parts of the colony did not get any water since last week," said a resident.

DDA officials alleged that the mob had been motivated by local political leaders and a meeting had been held at the chief engineer level on Thursday to sort out the problem.

"The command tank gets 5.75 million gallons per day (MGD) from Delhi Jal Board's Nangloi water treatment plant. Out of this, 1 MGD is meant for Madhu Vihar and adjoining areas which DJB supplies, 0.5 MGD for Palam Village, 0.25 for JJ colonies, 0.5 MGD for the airport and 3.5 MGD for Dwarka. Water is supplied through both lines and tankers. The residents of Madhu Vihar and Mahavir Nagar had been coming to the tank and illegally switching on the pump to divert water to their areas. We were unable to fill tankers due to this. They also threatened the pump operator who eventually ran off and refused to return since he feared for his life. We had been calling the police but before they could arrive, the mob would disperse. Finally on Sunday, around 20 policemen reached the spot and managed to disperse the crowd," said a senior DDA official.

On Thursday, a decision was taken to file a formal complaint with the police in case the people returned. Sources said that DDA had contacted the political persons involved in the matter and issued the warning to them. "Supply was finally resumed on Thursday evening to both Dwarka and the Airport.

Such incidents have occurred in the past as well but never this brazenly or for so long at a stretch. The people have been warned against returning to the command tank. Theirs is a DJB area and they get as much water as has been sanctioned for them," said DDA sources.
