Session description:

Discussions abound around the concepts of ‘code as first class research product’, ‘code citation’, ‘code publication’, ‘code repository’, ‘code metadata’, etc. Furthermore, publishing code is an integral part of making the research process more transparent and reproducible. Earth observation scientists write significant amounts of code each year ranging from contributions to large scale community models to the everyday data manipulation scripts. Except for the community models and formal code packages which may be published in specific community archives (e.g., CRAN), code publishing and sharing is not a common practice and is hampered by the lack of code repositories or registries that are designed to make code easily discoverable and reusable. This session seeks to explore community best practices, metadata, existing repositories, challenges, cost, benefits, and recommendations for what might be termed ‘workflow’ code publication, i.e., code developed for a specific research question.
