Cropping Systems Modeller (Junior) - Specialized in Plant Protection

Minneapolis, MN (USA) or Lethbridge, AB (CAN)

Reporting to the Agronomy Research and Development Manager, the Cropping Systems Modeler (Junior), specialized in plant protection will join the Agronomy Research and Development team to support the development and operations of agronomic decision support tools with an emphasis on crop protection and pest management.  The individual is expected to have a good understanding of risk prediction models related to diseases epidemiology and to pests' biology and ecology for major agronomic crops.

Duties may include the following:
  • Develop pest and disease risk models for major agronomic crops.
  • Model crops disease epidemics, pest dynamics.
  • Model crop yield losses and the effects of pest and diseases on crop growth and development (severity/damage).
  • Plan, monitor and supervise field crop experiments with a focus on pests and diseases risk model's development.
  • Gather and organize input data for pest and disease model's development.
  • Provide technical support to Operations staff.
  • Collaborate with other team members to identify best approaches and practices, prioritize needs, resolve conflicts and provide status updates.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, managers and software developers.
  • Consistently seek to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Travel to regional and international locations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 Education and Experience:
  • Masters degree (plant pathology, entomology, epidemiology, plant science, crop science, agronomy, or fields related to cropping systems modelling) or comparable working experience of 1-2 years.
  • Thorough understanding of agronomy, crop physiology, agrometeorology, soil science as it applies to crop production and plant protection.
  • Knowledge of experimental design, pests and pathogens monitoring, pest and disease damage assessment, crop phenology and agronomic practices.
  • Knowledge of model's development, parameterization, calibration, and validation.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis.
  • Able to use and manage large climate datasets.
  • Preference to those with the ability to build and/or modify basic R and Python scripts.
  • Able to work under minimal supervision and apply sound judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills essential for success.
  • Oriented toward team success.
  • Good verbal and technical writing skills.
Compensation: Farmers Edge offers a very competitive compensation package. Salary dependent on qualifications and skills.
