Hi folks,

I am deeply interested in acquire advanced skills on Dspace technology, including add-on development, customization, design, installation/configuration, etc.

Can someone point me some training center on Latin America, USA or Europe that can help me acquiring the skills I am looking for?

Although I live in São Paulo - Brasil, I am available to travel abroad.

TIA,

Dear Edmilson,

Such a course has been offered several times in the past at the University of Texas at Austin, the most recent time being in 2015.  Here’s a link with some details on the 2015 event:

http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=5iy95gcab&oeidk=a07eadaxjdp3c05fe73

Also, I know that Atmire has also offered DSpace training in the past, so you would do well to contact them: https://www.atmire.com/services

More recently a large training session was run at Jimma University in Ethiopia in collaboration with the University of North Texas and Texas A&M University.  That was a comprehensive course with material all the way from basic to advanced: https://www.ju.edu.et/ju-hosts-training-dspace-software

I’d be interested in running a course like one of these again, but it’s more for a classroom setting, so it would be good to see if there’s additional interest out there in the community.  For now, if you would like any of the slidesets I’ve used, please let me know.  They’re all open under a CC-BY license.

Best Wishes,

Hi James,

It would be great if you can running another Dspace technology course from basic to advanced as soon as possible... I hope more people is interested on that.

By the way, what do you think about offering an online course instead of a face to face one?  This way you can attract more students around the world.

For now, please send me  the slide sets I’ve mentioned.

Hugs,

Hi Edmilson,

As James already noted, we do occasionally hold such DSpace Advanced Training sessions. Unfortunately, we don't have any in the works at this immediate time. But, we can let you (and everyone else on this list) know when the next is organized.

The slides from James Creel's 2015 Advanced DSpace Training sessions are still available on slideshare at:

At the time this was run in 2015, DSpace was on version 4.2 (with 5.0 just about to be released). The latest version is now 6.0, so there have been some changes, but the slides themselves are still "mostly correct".  The changes in the codebase between 4.2 and 6.0 have mostly been new feature enhancements. The way that customizations are managed and DSpace is installed has *not* changed significantly.  However, the Configuration has changed a bit in DSpace 6, but there are detailed documentation on DSpace 6 configurations at: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC6x/Configuration+Reference   (The most significant change there is that the old "build.properties" file in DSpace 4 or 5 has been replaced by a "local.cfg" configuration file in DSpace 6.)

So, this is all to say that those materials are still a good place to start with DSpace, even today. They are however specific to the DSpace XMLUI in some areas (as the training session was specific to XMLUI), so the JSPUI is not covered as much in the later slidedecks.

Tim
