So...

http://diyhpl.us/wiki/transcripts/fbi-diybio-2012/howard-simon-dna20.txt

Howard mentioned something about a public list of people excluded from
ordering DNA from the ICSB companies. I wonder if any of us are on
this list? So, I have parsed this HHS file somewhat.

http://diyhpl.us/~bryan/irc/diybio/leie.csv
http://diyhpl.us/~bryan/irc/diybio/leie.py

Here are the banned businesses:
http://diyhpl.us/~bryan/irc/diybio/businesses.txt

Here are individuals with "no affiliations":

Some other stats:

Number of individuals: 49262
Number of businesses: 2792

I googled a few people from the the list to see if there was a pattern
in the "Exclusion Type". Just looking at the two most popular
exclusion groups (1128b4 and 1128a1)...

1128b4 are people who had some sort of medical license revoked.
1128a1 are people with a "program-related conviction," whatever that
means. Looks like maybe they did some sort of medicare/insurance
fraud or something.

Interesting to see that "bioterrorist" Steve Kurtz is still allowed to
order primers :P

OMG, is this a joke? I guess not. Apparently some folks out there don't have anything better to do with their time than to construct lists like this.

What's wrong with it? It's not like he went over the data by hand and
painstakingly compiled the list. Maybe there was a pattern in it, like
Cory thought. Maybe not.

What is the original source of the list (URL)?

I read your transcript of his speech.  Was he sympathetic to citizen-science customers?   Was it clear how we, as a community, could participate in the regulatory meetings in a more consistent way?

Do we have plans to get someone to the next meeting?

Tomas, how did you end up being the spokesman for the first meeting - did they reach out to you because you were nearby?  Had you previously worked on this topic?

Thanks
Mac

The LEIE list is from here:

http://oig.hhs.gov/exclusions/exclusions_list.asp

An EXE download? Hilarious. No thanks.

However, I am not sure if Howard is correct that this is the list that
DNA 2.0 is using or not. Maybe there's another public list that he was
referring to?

The rest of the conversation was put into Max Hodack's file (including
Q&A with Howard; it was sort of all over the place):

http://diyhpl.us/wiki/transcripts/fbi-diybio-2012/max-hodack-gene-synthesis.txt

Howard seems to not care whether his customers are professionals or
not, as long as the sequence isn't a controlled substance or otherwise
off limits from some ncbi database.

I don't know which meeting he was referring to. ICSB? ICSBNMG? ICGSB?
Something like that..

BTW, what the heck is up with that entry that says something like "BRCH CIA" ??

I punched the guy's name in here:
http://excluded-healthcare-providers.findthedata.org/l/34523/Barry-Odegaard
and it looks like BRCH CIA stands for "Breach of Corporate Integrity
Agreement".
