We don't have recycling at our company and the municipal recycler
doesn't take the plastics that pipette boxes are made of. Anyone got
any ideas for things to use them for? I took a few home to put change
or electronic components in. I hate to waste them; they look like
great enclosures for arduino projects.

I use the insert/rack as a spot and oct tube rack.  The outside box is good for sterilizing eppy tubes, small glass, etc or for holding pre cut parafilm for plates.

Im like the Martha Stewart of diybio.

Maybe you could share them (for getting something in exchange).

Before I worked for 3 weeks in the university lab (kind of traineeship, until last friday), I didn't have any boxes, just some pipette tips in a plastic bag ;)

I now have one  for 100uL and another for 10uL, so I've got everything I need. :)

A lab I worked at years ago was short on money. To save money we
purchased tips in bulk, packaged in bags rather than boxes. We
recycled boxes by reloading them with the tips from the bags (wearing
gloves), then autoclaved the refilled boxes. We were going through
around 2-3000 tips per day, so it saved a good chunk of money, around
$1000 per month. Tips in boxes cost around 80-100% more than in bags
but refilling the boxes is quite tedious, so it only makes sense if
you are short on money but not on time.

Ah.  That's the other thing that I do with those boxes...

We reload the boxes with tips from bags too. Does that mean we are short on money? :D

(We propbably are, at least in the student lab is a lack of money)

That's totally normal here in Ireland even for well funded labs.
Different cultures perhaps, because in other ways labs over here are
totally profligate with money on frankly stupid things.

We can't use the bulk bag of tips since we are very sensitive to
contamination issues. We recently started using replaceable racks that
are cheaper.

10uL tip racks fit 0.2mL PCR tubes perfectly.
