A few weeks ago i posted about making a video series about biohacking. As of posting this, fundraising is almost closed [just 3 days left! http://www.indiegogo.com/biohax] and didn’t go quite as planned, a little over 10% of the $1500 goal. Nevertheless the show must go on, the focus of the show will just need some tweaking. While tutorials on procedures used in biohacking will still be featured, more of the focus will be on purely education episodes. These will help give people a foundation of knowledge for their independent biotechnology endeavors, and hopefully that will also be exciting. We don’t have an exact start date. [Likely a Wednesday in early July]

Now i need your help through, under the suggestion of a member Alex i've setup a project on the site http://www.initiatr.com/ where people could collaborate. I've been doing some research but i'll still need your help, and if possible some video content from the community. You guys have expertise, i have a small but interested audience. experience editing video and summarizing science concepts. [over a year writing and editing my science news series Brainstorm] I see alot of posts from people looking for advice to start out, i'm not much farther from that myself. But with help from the community i think this video series could become an almost universal starting resource for new people.

If you're interested in helping with BiohaX contact me here or by email - dr.qd...@gmail.com
or skype - q-dragon1337
I need your email to invite you to the project on Initiatr
If you can't actively help with research etc. feel free to post tips or resources in response.

I look forward to making this together,
Q

I (still) think that a video series is a great idea.  Having what could serve as an "internal" media platform (that is, one produced for DIYBio, by DIYBio) would not only enable other indie scientists to get started and get to know each other, but it would give the non-DIYBio world an opportunity to hear our side of the story on our terms, for once (raise your hand if you've heard too many snippets on mainstream news programs about the "perils and promises" of DIYBio...)

I want to help however I can - please let me know what needs doing.

I think setting up an Initiatr page is a good idea.  That should be a good place to put something like this together more comprehensively.  I can't find the project there - can you send a link?

@Meow A PCR introduction is definitely an episode i'd like to do, but i still need your email to invite you to the project

@Alex here's the link for you http://www.initiatr.com/project/biohax/1978072014 or anybody else already on Initiatr

If possible i'd also like to discuss things over skype, let me know

we're kinda stalling here
what do you think about a G+ hangout to discuss the series?

Would you create a particular account with a particular social network
you took great pains to stay away from just to be able to follow a particular
discussion?

i don't quite understand your question

planning here and on Initiatr hasn't been going great so i thought a live group conversation would be good to start brainstorming, it doesn't have to be G+

to those involved with the project, Initiatr didn't email me when someone posted on the project page. please check often but for major points of discussion i will post here and on Initiatr. (input from anybody is welcome)

I think episode 1 should be something like biohacking 101/history

what would be some good introductory knowledge?
any resources about the beginnings of the biohacking 'movement'?

For basic techniques I would suggest 1) growing bacteria, 2) killing bacteria, 3) making media, 4) isolating DNA from bacteria (plasmid & genomic), 5) transformation and selection of transformants, 6) waste disposal. You could probably script this into one "episode" .

@shamrock that seems like a lot to cover in 1 video [considering i'm shooting for 5-10 minutes in length]

however for quicker procedures i was thinking of having 'hands-on segments' to break up the purely educational videos, perhaps having the making of growth media in episode 1

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE

Looks like i got an interview [and potentially more for the series] with Oliver Medvedik! I'll be thinking up some questions but anything specific you think i should ask?
