So, you create a company identity for yourself. File a doing business as fictitious name in your county.
Pay for the order with a check from the dba account with the fictitious name. That's all you need... well,
bookkeeping and a few other things maybe...and taxation, of course.

Better if we can find companies that don't discriminate and give them our custom.

I ordered my plasmid to be synthesised from Epoch Life Sciences, I'd say they do oligos too. They were reasonable and friendly, too. Payment by credit card.

If it's for iGEM, why not list your school as the institution???

My best friend from school did oligo synthesis for a company and we almost got their old DNA synthesizer, with the hope of producing DIY primers, but the company wanted their old machine back (so people had to buy their new ones, I assume).  Nevertheless, in the next week I may be able to give away some particular barcoding primers that my friend and I are trying to turn into something.  My friend ended up making about 8,000 rxns worth, so, plenty to share.

I dont know how many oligo's you'd have to sell to break even on a DNA synthesizer, but it'd be cool to look into supplying primers to the "common person".

It depends on what sort of synthesizer you buy. It looks like the cheapest ones that you can buy that may or may not work start around $15,000. The $1,000 items listed on ebay don't work. But if you were to buy some refurbished or new synthesizer, you're looking closer to $50,000. So, that's a lot of primers - at least a few thousand.

Also just because they ask for a company doesn't mean that they won't
ship to individuals. Try putting "none" if the webform requires it and
see what happens when you place an order.

I looked at their website, but it didn't say anything about oligo synthesis.

I already did when registering for one site, but I really don't want the department officials to come asking if the company does any verification or will ship to the department adress. (I guess it probably wouldn't do any big harm, but I'm a rather careful person).

I tried that with one site, but shortly thereafter got an email with "sorry, we don't give accounts to individuals". Guess I might try it with more companies, but I'm quite shy and would prefer to go under the radar where possible.

I used IDT.  No problem except that I wasn't home when my primers arrived >.<
