Sounds like a great start! Do you have friends who are interested in teaching sciency classes or leading workshops? Do you have a club and lab space?

I am just getting into DIY and I live on the west side of Washington.  Are you looking to collect money from all of your equipment?  There is a friend of mine looking at getting into DIY also but we don't have any stuff and we are pretty broke.  To make matters worse there isn't a hacker space that I know of in the state of washington.

Hey Nick (or anyone else in the Seattle Area),

I also just recently discovered DIYBio and was bummed to see that the Seattle group no longer exists. It looks like they died off due to there being no consensus on what project to work on plus no where to actually do experiments and build things. I think we can come up with solutions and revitalize this group. I'm pretty excited about all this and I would love to grab coffee
( or beer) with anyone who wants to collaborate.  What do you think?

Best Regards,

- Brim

I think the DIY Bio initiatives are wonderful, I just don't see why Seattle doesn't already house its own, especially if it's home to one of the top research institutions in the nation.

Hopefully you (or anyone) gets this message, I'm interested to hear more about the history of this group

Does anyone know if openbiotech got shut down or are they just remodeling their site? Its now a go-daddy ad page and no links to it work. I fear the worst... :(

Oh thank jebus! I was so worried something happened. Its up for me now, too. I was just having a conversation with a colleague about the dangers of open source as a means of upsetting big biotech companies and their bottomless wallets. I recommend the p2KB plasmid for its awesomeness and whatnot and when I went to show him the page it was down. That sparked some sad conversation about the darker parts of the biotech field. Glad to see there is still hope...

Umm, they're offering only 4 hours of available lab time once per
week. You won't even be able to grow an overnight culture.

You can do that at home.  Maybe they are trying to share more expensive resources?

I'm in the Seattle group.

The four hours is only an initial phase of HiveBio Lab. We hope to grow the lab over time. As we grow we will have the capacity to do more complex projects and increase the amount of time the lab can be open.
First we need to "open the doors". The microryza funding campaign is going to let us do that and to start teaching lab safety and basic molecular bio lab skills.

btw if anyone here is in Seattle and wants to meet everyone, we're meeting tomorrow in Freemont. Note the change of location from the previous meeting.

Because of our growing attendance for the discussion group we've decided to change the location. For the moment we'll still be meeting in Fremont, but at a different coffee shop where we've been able to reserve a meeting room. Tomorrow's meeting will be at Wine Tea Chocolate, at 3417 Evanston Ave. N. #102. We've reserved the room from 7pm to close, which is 10pm.

Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow!
