Hi,

Dataverse supports specialized files such as  tabular datasets, GraphML and FITS. I want to add additional file format. Can anyone point to me where I can add support for uploading of any files of a specialized format?  . We are unning version 3.6.2.

Thanks in advance

Hi Ofuuzo!

Thanks for your interest in contributing code to Dataverse!

Ideally, you'd contribute to the new 4.x code base rather than the 3.x
code base. Here's the "ingest" area of the code for 4.x:

https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/tree/master/src/main/java/edu/harvard/iq/dataverse/ingest

I'm curious to know which specialized file formats you're interested
in! Let's definitely coordinate this effort!

I would also be very interested in the data types you'd like to see supported, Ofuuzo. If you post some links then I'll probably dig around in how structured are they and their metadata.

I will post that when the librarians have gathered a list of the data types needed.

Hmm, so what you seem to be implying is that there is not 1 (or maybe 2) major data types for your field. Is that accurate?

For astronomy we try to focus on a single data type, FITS, because is has the broadest adoption already. It is also highly standardized (in format/metadata) and is sufficiently useful to store different kinds of data (tables, images, hierarchial data sets).

No, it is not what I implying. I received a report from a testing group saying that there are some data types not found in our default Dataverse. I have asked them to send them to me and I am yet to receive them.

In terms of special processing, it would be great if Dataverse generated a .pdf/a version of .docx files on the fly during ingest...

I would suggest to keep such functionality outside the core Dataverse application. This might be a use case that is supported by Archivematica.
As far as I can tell, Dataverse tells file formats apart by the media type that the browser sent along the file on upload. That is not always correct, and trying to create better file type detection is duplication of efforts. So file type detection and special file processing are better accessed by Dataverse as external services.
