Hello,

At UCLA we are working on building a local Dataverse.  From questions posed by our development support I wondered how many people are running with a "monolithic" installation or splitting parts between servers.

Thank you,

Hello,

At the time of our upgrade to 4.n, Odum chose a monolithic installation to take advantage of VMware's Fault Tolerance feature.
As upgrades have come and gone, we've split off TwoRavens/DataExplorer, and when we upgrade R we may move it to its own host for granularity/back-out.
From my absolutely unscientific observation I expect you'd achieve the greatest performance gains by breaking off the Postgres and Solr services onto their own VMs, which should shorten your disaster recovery window as well.

I hope this helps?
Donald

If it helps, when Harvard Dataverse recently switch from physical hardware to AWS[1], we switched to AWS's "PostgreSQL as a service" (RDS). As far as I know, we have two Glassfish servers as EC2 instances. I'm not sure where Solr and RServe live these days. Files are stored on S3. There's a diagram of our old architecture on physical hardware at http://guides.dataverse.org/en/4.9.2/installation/prep.html#advanced-installation if it's of interest.

That said, my impression is that most of the community runs everything on a single server. I could certainly be proven wrong, though!

We at Scholars Portal are using separate VMs for different components and 2 app servers load balanced behind HAProxy. I created a basic architecture diagram of our setup for reference at https://static.scholarsportal.info/static/dataverse/dataverse-dist.png
