Living from the Kingdom of Heaven
“‘If this day you only knew what makes for peace – but now it is hidden from your eyes’”-Luke 19:42
At this point it is appropriate for me plainly to reiterate what is most important (to me). From my earliest forays into the internet, I have stated my principle thus: “If Justice is to be possible, people must be free to refrain from injustice.” Healthy people don’t mistreat other people. Healthy people don’t perpetrate injustice, neither directly nor from a concealed position. Healthy people don’t organize against freedom and the fruit of freedom. The Kingdom of Heaven is truly a wonder, where everyone’s well-being is truly a benefit to everyone; and it only gets better, over time and with numbers. Mental-illness eh?: woe to those who change bitter into sweet, and sweet into bitter (Isaiah 5:20).
Notwithstanding the technological marvels, the history of man is travesty upon travesty, and a counterfeit of health even for the best, at their best. Blinded and broken are our “shepherds”. Our society is an institution of systematic oppression. Inescapable coercion. And mere conformity isn’t enough: to get off the mat one must advance conformity with gusto. In “musical chairs” someone will be left with nowhere to sit. In a populous earth, the Life Religious is absolutely precluded. And even the hope of Living Morality is suppressed, when disfigurement fails. Ohh the weight of sin! Who bats an eye? The united states of america: “the land of the free and the home of the brave”. Kiddoes, Santa Claus is more real than that one!
Nevertheless: I am a source of universal unconditional Love.
“Sons of men! till when is my glory for shame? Ye love a vain thing, ye seek a lie. Selah.”-Psalms 4:2
I was 28 (beginning of 2006) when I first read the Bible for myself. I was not a believer. Retrospectively I call my then self an ignostic, only learning that term later. At that time, my best friend was an American son of Jewish parents. I started reading from the beginning, and when I first read the Pentateuch, seeing how God aimed to order his people, I went to my friend and exclaimed, roughly: “man, this was awesome! If the Israelites were still a people today I would go be a permanent alien with them.” The Israelites were to be a people in which everyone, every male at least, was to have his portion. No man was to be under the thumb of another man. A man was equipped for freedom amongst man, and to perpetually walk (humbly) with his God. The people was thus organized, and a* tithe was sufficient to fund all “government” demands. I Bless that vision.
America is the top-dog nation in a dog-eat-dog world. With its lips it professes to abide “the rule of law”, and to be a beacon of light. But that is a sham and a ruse, and the lip-service is a game of appearances and disingenuousness. The rule of law only comes to bear if there is a “spotlight”; otherwise power does what power will. Eat and not be eaten. Plan to eat, and plan never to be eaten. The dog’s whole thought-space is corrupted. Isolated thoughts of righteousness are dismissed as they arise. Naïve. The dynamics of integrated righteousness, though they require no extraordinary capacity for thought, don’t stand a chance of getting a hearing. The question “Will I be convicted of a felony?” expresses the practical extent of moral considerations. Within that, the integral dynamic centers on opportunity costs vis-à-vis financial gain. The ultimate dignity of the person must hitch a ride as best it can.
America is the top-dog nation in a dog-eat-dog world. Its big dogs are as big as dogs get. Its little dogs are as big as little dogs get. There are big dogs in other nations, even in low-down nations, but the further down those nations are, the more the big dog has to eat his own. Being the top-dog nation, America’s big dogs do most of their eating internationally. But Americas littlest dogs do get eaten. By those just bigger than them. Typical pyramid scheme. White-washed by the lip-service.
America is the top-dog nation in a dog-eat-dog world. It appeals to all breeds of dog. The opulence of the biggest dogs is for real. The security of the mid-sized dogs is for real. The pleasures of the small dogs are myriad. The dogs that do get ground-up and eaten are too small a percentage by vote, and far too small a percentage by influence, even to recognize. Cost of doing business. Even in the richest country, something like one out of 50 will be sacrificed to the idol. But unlike poker, that one-outer never hits: so just make sure you’re of the 49!
America is the top-dog nation in a dog-eat-dog world. We don’t care to look at the effects of a dog-eat-dog world on lesser nations. The point is: if an American doesn’t like it: set the table.
“But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”-Matthew 24:37
Even the Nobel laureate economist, of the right-wing’s famed Chicago school, Friedrich Hayek, has firmly declared that a genuine safety net is not inimical to a free-market. See his book “The Constitution of Liberty”. Or, as is suggested with language less decided than I remember seven years ago, the Mont Pelerin Society’s statement of aims: “further study is desirable […] in regard to the following matter”, at point 4: “The possibility of establishing minimum standards by means not inimical to initiative and functioning of the market.” I love capitalism like I love the NFL, Go Broncos!, but there’s more to life than football.
Imagine a world where … Well, first, imagine a world where you are dead broke. And not because of a physical handicap. As far as the work per se is concerned, there are myriad jobs you could do. And better than people who have those jobs now, at least after a brief settling in. But either way, imagine what life is like when you are dead broke. This may be beyond your imagination. But in our modern America, there is nowhere for you to be. While you’re awake you can pass through lots of wheres, but you can’t stop very long anywhere. There’s nowhere for you to sleep. Sleep is super necessary. You’ll be spending lots of effort, day in day out, thinking about where you might get away with sleeping. If you’re predictable you’re predictable. But, at the same time, you have to stay close enough to a source of water. Water for drinking isn’t too-too hard to muster. Forget bathing, waste elimination is pressing it (we don’t provide those facilities because those facilities tend to draw people who Need them, and people who don’t Need them don’t want Those people around). Forget a healthy diet. Forget health. Forget healthy decisions. No, what we do is grind people up, which leaves them permanently occupied with the most base needs, and then we criminalize their ersatz solutions, and also go on to blame them exclusively, while acting as if our shit don’t stink. The dynamic is strictly consequent to our institutions. If everyone were Albert Einstein, and they couldn’t change the institution, Albert Einstein would be that bum. Imagine the hell you impose on bums in order to enjoy the immoral luxury of the pyramid scheme. Evil is ubiquitous. But we’ll pay a shit-ton for security equipment and protection services. And police, courts, jails, etc.
Imagine a world where the base necessities are guaranteed to all. And not just with the tongue, but wherein that guarantee is felt Guaranteed. Yea, it will be a lot harder to find someone to do your dirty work. Well, it will be a lot harder to find someone to do your rotten and immoral work. It may be somewhat harder to find someone to do your merely dirty work. But this is the picture of a market which is truly free. If the stick of coercion is removed, say, by basic income, since the world is too populated to give everyone 40 adequate acres, then, and only then, are people free to make what constitutes a free choice, conventionally speaking. If you complain that the patterns of choices will be put in upheaval, you admit that the market is nowhere near free as it stands. And, not that anyone would argue that there would be little change, but if not, then what a petty sum is gained at the cost of Justice.
Healthy people are pleased to contribute to the well-being of the world. Healthy people prefer to thrive and prosper rather than to eek through on the barest of necessities.
“‘And he said to him, “Child, thou art always with me, and all my things are thine;”’”-Luke 15:31
Imagine a world where you could dedicate yourself to morality. Imagine a world where your neighbors could dedicate themselves to morality. I’m more than familiar with the retort. “Justice isn’t stable.” “All it takes is one bad apple [to spoil the bushel].” “You aren’t gonna change the nature of man.” And, at worst, “So long as there’s a risk of war, I’m gonna be prepared.” :Water telling the freezer I’ll never turn ice.
Morality is rewarding. Even against all odds it is rewarding! How much more when it is “swimming downstream”?! This, to be sure, is rooted in the unimpeachable metaphysics of personality: anything short of agape-Love is hell. Eventually You’ll see. Better sooner than later.
Imagine a world where you don’t have to pay the ultimate, or even an exceedingly exorbitant, price for your dedication to Morality. Imagine a world where you never have to compromise, but can always legitimately “do your best”. Where you can know that you did your best, and you can see the fruit of your continuous, uninterrupted, progress. Imagine a world where this does Not set you at odds with your parents, your spouse, your children, your friends, your co-workers, your neighbors. Imagine a world where you waste no resources on trash like lying or plotting how to hold over against some competitor or trade “partner”. Imagine a world where you are proud to share all your best insights with your kids when they show interest, and don’t turn them down “for their protection”. Imagine a world where the child-like innocence lasts beyond childhood. Imagine a world where you can walk into a group of strange humans ready to enjoy their company like a child would look to enjoy the company of a bunch of strange puppies and kittens. Imagine a world where you can openly pursue your best self at all times, knowing there come what may, “people are just people like you”. Shit, imagine a world where getting fired or firing someone in no way resembles “the end of the world”. Where “failing” is a sped bump rather than a sink-hole that swallows the car. Where a mistake is something that can be confessed and addressed rather than denied and denied.
Again, I love the NFL, and the salary cap (basic income) goes a long way towards making every team competitive with the “Yankees”. The greatness of the Patriots, Go Broncos!!!, is still undeniable; likewise the futility of the Browns. If you’re opposed to the free market even while you champion the “free market”, you confess an immoral agenda. Either way, the purview of the league is confined to their venue.
“‘If the world hates you, you should realize that it hated me before you.’”-John 15:19
N.B.: slavery in the united states didn’t end because slavery is immoral, but (first, and more readily in the North) because the economics proved more favorable.
“‘I have told you this so that through me you may have peace. In the world you'll have trouble, but be courageous—I've overcome the world!’”-John 16:33
