ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) - Hospital officials say Croatian baritone Vice
Vukov, popular for his ballads but also a symbol of Croatian
patriotism in the 1970s, has died.
Vukov died overnight Tuesday in a Zagreb clinic at the age of 72,
after nearly three years in a coma caused by a fall.
Vukov was popular in the 1960s and 1970s, also representing Yugoslavia
at the Eurovision Song Contest.

But in the early 1970s, he joined a movement that demanded more
autonomy for Croatia within the Yugoslav federation. The movement was
crushed by the communists and Vukov was forced to leave the country.

DEPARTURE OF A LEGEND Singer Vice Vukov's Funeral to be Held on Monday
The funeral of the great artist will be held at 12:30pm, and will be
preceded by a commemoration in the `People's Home´ palace.


ZAGREB, CROATIA - The funeral of the Croatian musical great Vice
Vukov, who died on Wednesday morning after spending nearly three years
in a coma, will be held at 12:30pm at Zagreb's Mirogoj cemetery, we
find out from his daughter Ivana Vukov.

The funeral of the great artist will be preceded by a commemoration
that was organized as a joint effort between the family of the
deceased singer, the Croatian Composers Society of and the Croatian
Musician's Union, as well as SDP (Social Democratic Party) who will
join the commemoration.

"We talked to SDP and others in order to arrange the details of the
commemoration. We are still shocked with the news that father is gone.
It is hard for all of us" said Ivana Vukov in a telephone
conversation.

Commemoration in the 'renaissance hall' of the 'people's home' palace

SDP's spokesperson Gordana Grbic confirmed that SDP is going to
participate in the commemoration for one of the greatest artists from
Croatia, saying that the party has been in contact with the family
since the morning.

"SDP will join in the commemoration that will be held on Monday, 10am
at the renaissance hall of the people's home palace. According to our
information, the commemoration is being organized by the Croatian
Composers Society and the Croatian Musician's Union" said Grbic.

Croatian Stars Mourn Loss of Singer Vukov


Croatian stars have been saddened with the loss of the best Croatian
voice, with the death of the singer Vice Vukov.


His colleagues reacted with disbelief and sadness because they are
aware that an irreplaceable artist has gone.

Josipa Lisac, Drago Dikic, Arsen Dedic, Zdenka Vuckovic and Stjepan
Mihaljinec were amongst those that publicly shared their thoughts
about the deceased Vice Vukov.

"My whole family is very moved by this news. I shared my childhood and
youth with Vice because we grew up as neighbours in Sibenik. Vice
later sang my songs, we performed together at Lisinski hall. This loss
is great. We have lost one of the best Croatian voices" said Arsen
Dedic.

Vice Vukov was born on August 3, 1936 in Sibenik (Croatia). He died
today after nearly three years in a coma.

Book of Condolence For Vice Vukov Opened Parliament vice president
Vladimir Seks and SDP`s Ivo Josipovic were among the first to enter
the book of condolence for the deceased MP.


ZAGREB, CROATIA - The news of the death of Vice Vukov, a great legend
of Croatian music and former member of Parliament, briefly interrupted
the Parliamentary sitting today.

- Unfortunately, I have sad news to inform. Today, your colleague Vice
Vukov has passed away, who had spent a long time in a coma following a
tragic accident he had in front of the Parliament building. His life
path has ended - Croatian Parliament vice president Vladimir Seks
said, asking for a minute of silence.

Coming down the stairs at the Croatian Parliament on November 17,
2005, Vukov fell and hit his head, while soon after undergoing surgery
slipped into a coma. Doctors announced on March 2006 that he had no
chances of recovering. He occasionally became conscious from November
2007 and his condition was stable.

A book of condolence was opened at the Croatian Parliament. Vladimir
Seks and Social Democratic Party (SDP) member Ivo Josipovic were among
the first to enter it.

Vice Vukov has left a permanent mark in Croatian music, as well as
Croatian politics, said Croatian President Stjepan Mesic today.

- I knew Vice Vukov as a musician, as well as a humanitst and a man
who was above all close to politics and later on, entered it - Mesic
said.

Vice Vukov dies at the age of 72


Croatian singer Vice Vukov died overnight at the age of 72 having been
in coma for almost three years after a fall. He represented Yugoslavia
twice in the Eurovision Song Contest, in 1963 and 1965.
Vukov was a popular singer in his home country in the 1960s. In the
early 1970s he joined a movement demanding more independence for
Croatia within the Yugoslav federation. When this movement was downed,
he had to leave the country and was banned from performing publicly
until 1989.

Vice Vukov took part in the 1962 Yugoslav national final but did not
reach the top two. The year after, he was chosen internally to
represent the country with the song Brodovi in London, where he
finished 11th with three points. In 1965 he took part in the national
final with no less than four songs and could win the selection with
Čežnja. At the Eurovision Song Contest in Naples, he finished 12th
with two points.

Pjevac i saborski zastupnik Vice Vukov umro je prosle noci u 73.
godini zivota. Posljednje tri godine bio je u komi u koju je pao nakon
sto se poskliznuo na stubama u Saboru RH. U tzv. vigilnu komu pao je
nakon sto mu je operirana glava. Dane je provodio u bolesnickom
krevetu u posebnoj bolnici za plucne bolesti u Rockfellerovoj ulici u
Zagrebu. U bolnici ga je redovito posjecivala obitelj koja je not
allowed pokusavala s njim komunicirati.



Vice Vukov rodjen je 1936. u Sibeniku. Na vrhuncu pjevacke karijere
bio je 60-ih i 70-ih godina kada je dobivao brojne festivalske
nagrade. Bio je estradni umjetnik, pjevac snaznoga baritona koji mu je
omogucio uspjesno izvodjenje najrazlicitijih zanrova te publicist i
politicar. Na Filozofskom fakultetu Sveucilista u Zagrebu diplomirao
je filozofiju i talijanski jezik. U Parizu je diplomirao na Institutu
za visoke medjunarodne studije (Institut des Hautes Etudes
Internationales) u okviru Sveucilista prava, ekonomije i drustvenih
znanosti.

Blistavu pjevacku karijeru poceo je na Opatijskom festivalu
prvonagradjenom skladbom Miroslava Biroa i Drage Britvica "Mirno teku
rijeke" 1959. godine. Tada pocinje desetljece njegova suverenog
vladanja u glazbi: sezdesetih godina bio je najtrofejniji pjevac u
Jugoslaviji. Vec onda bio je drustveno angaziran sto svjedoci i to da
je jedan od potpisnika ugovora za socijalno i mirovinsko osiguranje
estradnih radnika 1963. godine. U sklopu medjunarodne festivalske
scene nastupao je na Euroviziji (London 1963., Napulj 1965.),
Svjetskom festivalu Sopot (1966.) te na dva festivala Intervizije,
gdje oba puta osvaja Srebrni notni kljuc, za "Bokeljsku
noc" (Hegedusic-Perfiljeva, Bratislava 1967.)i "Ako sada
odes" (Mihaljinec-Britvic, Karlovy Vary 1968.).



Na Midemu u Cannesu 1967. godine zastupa Jugoton. Nastupa u Rio de
Janeiru 1969. te u Tokiju 1970., gdje uz drugu nagradu za skladbu "The
Dream World" (Kabiljo-Britvic) prima i nagradu The Best Singer.
Jugoton 1970. godine objavljuje njegovu prvu LP plocu "Mirno teku
rijeke". Godine 1972. njegove se pjesme, kao istaknutom sudioniku
Hrvatskog proljeca, skidaju s radija i televizije, a punih ce mu 18
godina biti zabranjeno i javno djelovanje u domovini.



Od 1972. do 1976. godine povremeno je boravio u Parizu. Na hrvatsku
glazbenu scenu vratio se 1989. albumom klasicnih napuljskih pjesama
pod naslovom "Bella Italia!" koji mu donosi zlatnu i platinastu plocu.
Te godine slijedi trijumfalan povratak na domacu glazbenu scenu. Od
1996. godine bio je stalni kolumnist, odnosno politicki komentator
nekoliko novina. Kao rezultat toga, zagrebacki Nakladni zavod Matice
hrvatske objavio je knjige politickih eseja "Pogled iza
ogledala" (1999.) i "Tvoja zemlja, uspomene na 1971." (2002.). Vice
Vukov imenovan je 15. sijecnja 2001. veleposlanikom Republike Hrvatske
u Svicarskoj. Na parlamentarnim izborima izabran je za zastupnika u
petome sazivu Sabora RH 2003. godine. U zastupnickim klupama proveo je
dvije godine, sve do tragicnog dogadjaja 17. studenoga 2005. kada je

Vijest o smrti Vice Vukova nakratko je prekinula redovitu sjednicu
Sabora RH, a zastupnicima se obratio potpredsjednik Sabora Vladimir
Seks rekavsi: - Vice Vukov bio je covjek koji je na plemeniti nacin
poticao domoljublje. Njegov trag u hrvatskoj kulturi ostat ce

Poštovana obitelji,

u ime Ministarstva kulture i u osobno ime upućujem izraze iskrene
sućuti i poštovanja prema uspomeni na gospodina Vicu Vukova, uglednog
pjevača i saborskog zastupnika.

Svojim javnim djelovanjem na nacionalnoj kulturnoj sceni obilježio je
jedno veliko i vrlo značajno razdoblje hrvatske glazbe, a pamtimo ga
po nezaboravnim i jedinstvenim interpretacijama. Na njegov repertoar
od više stotina pjesama, pobjede na značajnim festivalima,
diskografsku produkciju te mnogobrojne koncerte i onaj posljednji iz
2005., danas nas sjećaju antologijske izvedbe pjesama Mirno teku
rijeke, Zvona moga grada, Pismo ćali, Bokeljska noć, Evo san ti doša,
Dobro mi došel, prijatel, Suza za zagorske brege ili Dalmatinska
elegija te Tvoja zemlja, koje su za njega, kao simboli ljubavi prema
domovini, imali najdublje osobno značenje.

Ostaje nam sjećanje na umjetnika izuzetne karijere i životne sudbine,
našega suvremenika kojemu je glazba obilježila život i učinila ga
jednim od velikana hrvatske glazbene scene.

LEAVES A GOLDEN MARK : Vice Vukov Was A Great Artist

Every Vice Vukov`s speech at the Parliament was a real gem. Vice will
be remembered by the Croatian people, said Ivo Josipovic of the SDP.


ZAGREB, CROATIA - Ivo Josipovic gave a statement on behalf of the
Social Democratic Party (SDP) anent the death of former member of
Parliament Vice Vukov.

- Vice Vukov was a great artist, an intellectual, a politician, a
great man. The SDP has missed him at the Parliament for a long time -
Josipovic said, expressing regret that Vice Vukov spent a long time
outside Croatia due to politics, because his patriotism was
misunderstood.

- He still forgave everything, his every speech at the Parliament was
a real gem. Vice will be remembered by the Croatian people - Josipovic
said.

The commemorative service for Vice Vukov will be held in music
circles, as well as at the SDP facilities probably.

Vladimir Seks, vice president of the Croatian Parliament, briefly
interrupted the parliamentary discussion at 11:20 hours to announce
the sad news to the MPs.

Mark in Croatian culture left in golden letters

- Unfortunately, I have sad news to inform. Today, your colleague Vice
Vukov has passed away, who had spent a long time in a coma following a
tragic accident he had in front of the Parliament building. His life
path has ended - Seks said.

He went on saying that Vukov has emphasised and induced patriotism in
a noble way.

- His mark in Croatian culture will remain in golden letters - Seks
concluded in the end, inviting the gathered MPs for a minute of
silence.
