Starting in June I will be opening a new coworking space in Albuquerque.  The space is located in Downtown Albuquerque at 215 Gold Ave SW. The space is over 2500 sq feet in size and features wi-fi internet connection, a wireless networked printer/copier/fax, business seminars, networking meetings, a large private conference room with a projector and sound system, and of course excellent coffee.  The space will be available for access with full and part time memberships as well as day passes, and all first time visitors will recieve one free day of access.  If you have any suggestions or questions, please reply.  I appreciate any input and support.  Thanks.

Hi Jasper,

We are just about ready to open our doors.  We have got the furniture in, our movable walls are coming next week, we've got wi-fi up a running  and a printer/copier is coming this week.  We have some art to hang on the walls and are working with some exciting local artists to assemble a collection for an art rotation in the space.  Our open house is scheduled for the 18th of July and we also have our first presentation that day as well.  Through a partnership with a local small business/entrepreneurship advocacy group, we are happy to host representatives from STEPS, the Albuquerque Independent Business Alliance and the Loan Fund to talk about their organizations and the programs that they provide to help foster independent business in Albuquerque.  We have also assembled a core community of members and supporters that we hope will help our space succeed.

Still working to figure out some of the lingering questions that face coworking spaces as a whole such as programs for member check-in and membership profiles, but the discussions through the group are providing some great insight and suggestions on those issues.  The only other question we're facing is how to effectively get our name out to the community.  We've had mixed success with traditional advertising.  Any thoughts?

Hope all is well for you in Durango, we'll stop by to see you when we come through next time.

Hi Chad,

Together with a carpenter friend of mine, we built 6' wide x 8' tall x 2' deep boxes with locking wheels attached to the bottom to ease repositioning.  They are framed out with 1" x 3"s, faced with 1/4" plywood, and painted the same color as the walls in our space. Some pics of the walls during construction can be seen on our facebook page.

We are super excited about using the walls to separate different areas in our space and also for staging when we do gallery exhibitions.

Nice!  Why so thick? Was that for stability?  Looks like they could be outfitted with shelves, maybe?

I think you could do pretty much whatever you wanted with them depending on how they are constructed.  We made them 2' thick for stability and also so the wheels could be placed on the bottom of the wall rather than having them stick out, like an upside down T.  I was actually thinking of making them slightly shorter and putting potted plants set in to the top.  We also considered putting doors on them to access the interior but that would have meant that some hardware would be exposed on the outside and we wanted to keep them really clean looking.

Noel,

Those are pretty cool. We have been kicking around ideas for movable walls, but haven't come up with anything we thought would work. But those look pretty sturdy.

My biggest concerns outside of the surface being really clean so that we could use them for exhibiting artwork, was stability and trip hazards.  We got away from the upside down T design quickly due to the trip hazard that the projecting wheels posed. Then we settled on the large box design.  Initially we thought of building them 16" deep but that was just too thin for the height that we wanted.  Without anything else the walls are pretty sturdy due to the amount of materials that go in (it took a good hard shove to rock them) but I think we are actually going to add some weight to the base which should make them stand firm in place once the wheels are locked.
