What online network platforms (Ning, FB, etc.) are you using?

Hey there, we just shut down our Ning network because it became so
dang irritating. But it's left us wondering: what are some good
alternatives for building a online social network that can support a
coworking space?

What tool or tools are you using to keep your members connected
online?

Among the things we're looking for:
> Robust member profiles
> Member billing (with lots of flexibility! Currently using PayPal. Meh.)
> Scheduling conference rooms & other resources
> Classified-type postings ("I need a resource", "I'm available as a resource", "I have a computer for sale", etc.)
> Online collaborative tools
> Photo galleries
> Event signup & payment
> ...and probably a bunch of stuff I haven't considered yet!

This all seems like stuff Ning should be able to handle one way or
another, but I've never been happy with the usability of that
platform. I have to believe there are some other tools out there for
communities like ours.

Cheers,

Open Atrium, self-hosted, might be the thing for you.

Citizen Space is using a customized Wordpress template from Woothemes.com - self-hosted.

Yeah, wordpress and drupal solutions are generally the way to go.

Wordpress + buddypress can be used to good effect.

The drupal commons distribution is pretty neat too.

As for facebook, be sure to create a page as opposed to a group. And feed the RSS feed of your blog into it using the Notes app.

Hi,

we're going to be using a Joomla based plugin called JomSocial.  Comes packed with loads of Facebook type features like image tagging, walls, picture and video uploads, groups, PMs, friend locator, dating match, Facebook integration et., etc.  www.jomsocial.com

I don't think I've heard any other spaces using Joomla, I'd be interested to know if any are?  We've been using it for a launch pad for about 6 months, we love it.

We are going to be "rolling our own" network based on Drupal. We may
be using Drupal Commons as a base, metioned earlier in this thread.
The developers have set up a demo site you can use, in an "eat your
own dogfood" manner, it is a site about their software and the
community that is growing around using it.

http://commons.acquia.com/

Once we get our software going (our space is set to open in October),
I'm hoping to release our configuration as a distribution that others
can install and use to run a community or association themselves.

Peace,

Hi Don!

Do you use Google products at all? I've designed an intranet before
using Google sites and it was super easy and intuitive! They have
templates for all sorts of site types, including a pretty usable
interactive website I believe!

I've used JomSocial a few times and it's great generic social network
like Ning.

Very excited to hear more about Ryan's modified Drupal solution.

jdaviscoates, just wanted to say I think you might be right about communitytools.  I'm going to reach out and see how the coworkingregistry could work with them.
