Hola Compas,

Derretir is a stem changing (ortographic) verb (e to i) in the present (except for nosotros and vosotros and often called “boot verbs” because the changes resemble a boot in the present tense), preterite (third person singular and plural) and gerund (ing) form of the verb.

There are also stem changes in both the present and past (imperfect) subjunctive but the rules are very confusing for the beginning and intermediate Spanish Student.

Whew! ¡Qué alivio!

For those who seriously want to study Spanish grammar or try to understand it, purchase “A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish” by John Butt and Carmen Benjamin.

Gene,

Should I call 9-1-1?  jajaja.  Just in case I've got my catalejo (spyglass) pointed towards your mountain to keep an eye on zopilote (buzzard) activity...   (☉_☉)

Heck!  I just got through figuring out what TRANSITIVE and REFLEXIVE verbs are in English, now I can (almost) add stem-changing boot root buggers to my skill set!  Who knew this could be so much fun?!  As part of my study, I had to go find more examples of this exciting concept:

Reír: Yo reí - Tú reíste - Él rió - Nosotros reímos - Vosotros reísteis - Ellos rieron

Sentir: Yo sentí - Tú sentiste - Él sintió - Nosotros sentimos - Vosotros sentisteis - Ellos sintieron

Morir: Yo morí - Tú moriste - Él murió - Nosotros morimos - Vosotros moristeis - Ellos murieron

And, Moriarty... before you get started, let me remind you about those negative waves...

I guess there is no way around studying those verb tables.  To think, I actually had other plans for the year!  ;-)

Thanks for the tip on the book, Christopher.  Turns out I needed to order stuff from Amazon today -- I'll be sure to include a copy of that book.
