  • Un agujero negro es una región finita del espacio en cuyo interior existe una concentración de masa lo suficientemente elevada como para generar un campo gravitatorio tal que ninguna partícula material, ni siquiera la luz, puede escapar de ella.

    A black hole is a finite region of space within which there is a concentration of mass high enough to generate a gravitational field such that no material particle, not even light, can escape it.

Sam, this afternoon I transcribed all of the words of the day into a notebook I keep for learning Spanish.  Other stuff there comes from various sources, including similar (but inferior) sites online.  I just want to give you a barrel (un barril) or maybe un tonelado of kudos for having created (and so far maintained) what to me is the most useful of all the Spanish language teaching sites I've encountered in my quest for improving my Spanish!!! I just hope you can keep this going, or even find a way to convert it into a professional venture, maybe with a little help from your friends!

One question came into my mind:  what's the difference between echar and sacar?  One of my househusbandly quehaceres  (chores) is to sacar la basura.  But I could also echar la basura.  

And maybe, for a future word of the day, you or others who speak Spanish better than I could delve into the difference between bastante and suficiente.   When to use which?   

Anyway, I wish this site had more participants, thus more readers for this excellent guide to Spanish, Word of the Day.  joe

Joe, if you echar the basura you leave us wondering where you threw it.  But if you sacar the basura we don't much care where you took it out to.

And I violated my no posting after 2 drinks rule so by tomorrow I may care where you took the trash.

As for Sam, I really appreciate his word of the day.  Now, if I could just remember it the next day . . .

Oh, well.  Time for drink #3.  Or is it 4?  I don't remember.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the encouragement... and the reminder that we've got nothing in the queue for tomorrow!  jajaja.  I'm sure there are experts here that could chime in to correct us novatos, but I think of "sacar" as "to take out" and of "echar" as "to throw out".  So you could say, "throw out the trash," or "take out the trash."  But, "take out the trash" sounds better and for that reason I'd suggest that "sacar" normally wins out over "echar" when it comes to taking out the trash.  For example, you could fire someone with "echar" and security could then "sacar" them from the facility after they were fired.  Professional ventures?  Bah, I've almost given up on them.  Lots of work and usually little payback.  That being said I have yet to become independently wealthy, so maybe I am in no position to poo-poo any ideas.  jajaja.  I'm about to sell a house here in Costa Rica, so I might reinvest la plata in a building some rental property or an apple orchard -- a few years ago I was involved with a failed attempt to import a bunch of apple tree root stock and I still think that might be a fruitful enterprise...  ;-)

I think "un montón" would be a more common Tico way to say a lot of something.  How much wood would a wood-chuck chuck?  ¡Un montón!

Hi Don,

Only 4?  Get with the program, man!  My wife and I finally called a truce after fighting for a solid week or two on remodeling projects and the incumbent disorder (which doesn't bother me, but drives the little woman crazy!) so we threw a(nother) quarantine party this afternoon.  After I set our grill afire with our wet wood...  I refuse to squirt floor wax or burn plastic trash in our grill to get things blazing and so after 20 minutes of blowing on wet pizza-box cardboard, I did get flame and we proceeded to cook some nice garlic chicken, drink a case or 2 of beers, and play our favorite parlor game: chismeando.

I have way lost track myself as well...  jajaja.
