I am working on deploying Concerto on a new machine and am having some
trouble. Our other units handle Concerto beautifully with almost no
config time required.

New Machine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859324001&Tpk=bis-6620
Problem: "failed to mount CF card, system dead..."

I have added the rootwait=10 to the APPEND line in the syslinux.cfg
file and it worked. It forced the system to wait before boot. After
the 10 second wait I get this:

mount: /dev/hda1 is not a valid block device
mount: /dev/hdb1 is not a valid block device
mount: /dev/hdc1 is not a valid block device
mount: /dev/hdd1 is not a valid block device
mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device
mount: /dev/sdb1 is not a valid block device
mount: /dev/sdc1 is not a valid block device
mount: /dev/sdd1 is not a valid block device
mount: /dev/hda is not a valid block device
failed to mount CF card, system dead...

We really like this unit because it front loads a CF card allowing to
easily swap out the OS medium should it become damaged without having
to take a unit down and then take it apart. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Please try doing a Concerto flash drive install using the procedure at http://www.concerto-signage.com/help_pages/33. I also suspect that the CF reader on this machine is really a USB device, so you may need to follow the procedure on that page to set the "rootwait" parameter. We have received a number of reports of USB issues with the current Concerto Player build, so I will be taking a look at this in the near future.

If you can get the USB drive to boot, try dropping to a shell with a CF card loaded. Then run "dmesg" and send me the output. If not, try booting a Linux live CD (e.g. from a USB CD drive) while a CF card is inserted. Then run "sudo dmesg" and "sudo lsusb" and send the output. Thanks.

The CF card was setup using the flash installer. "rootwait=10" is
already set up. I have looked at the device itself.

The USB drives do boot. I loaded a live cd (usb) of Ubuntu earlier and
the CF card wouldn't even show up. Do you want me to try a live cd
version of Concerto instead?

Thanks!

Just set up a Concerto live cd and it will not boot. It shows the
device as connected but will not boot the device. I put the Ubuntu usb
in again and it saw the Concerto CF card this time. This is a lot of
stuff, but here is the output from the shell commands:

(I did this from a Ubuntu Live CD/USB drive)

Try installing Concerto onto a USB flash drive or CD. If you could provide me with the output of the commands I mentioned earlier from the Ubuntu system, I can also assist with troubleshooting further. (Click Applications->Accessories->Terminal to get a prompt where you can enter them.)

Thanks for the input! It appears that your system uses the sdhci driver to access the CF reader. Concerto Player does not support this driver as yet. This had typically not been an issue since most front-panel CF readers we had seen connect over either IDE or USB.

Also, if your system fails to boot from a USB CD drive, you may need to increase the rootwait time more, or there may be an additional driver issue at play. Please send me the isolinux.cfg and config.pl files from your boot medium, and I may be able to provide a bit more help.

Here are the two files you asked for. Sorry it took me so long. I am one of two people working on this and my colleague accidentally took the CF card with the files on it. I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Try changing the line which reads...
append initrd=/initrd root=/dev/ram0 init=/sbin/concerto_boot cdboot=1

to...

append initrd=/initrd root=/dev/ram0 init=/sbin/concerto_boot cdboot=1 rootwait=20

That may help when booting from a USB device. As far as your built-in CF reader goes, I took another look at your dmesg output and it appears to actually be a PATA device. This should be supported using the pata_sch driver, which may not have been included in your kernel. I am going to look at rebuilding the kernel and distributing the update later today. This should also address the USB issues other folks are experiencing.

It looks like I gave you a file I had backed up instead of the file on the card. The line actually reads like this:

append initrd=/initrd root=/dev/ram0 init=/sbin/concerto_boot rootwait=10

I know "rootwait=10" was holding as I could count the wait time before boot. I did remove the "cdboot" after I read it could cause some problems on some devices. I will be looking for the new kernel. Thanks for your help!
